An intimate and detailed album of piano improvisations and performances of works by Bill Evans, Federico Mompou, and Paul Buchanan (AKAThe Blue Nile.)

notes

Departures is the solo piano debut release of pianist/composer Bob Gold. This is an intimate recording of improvisations and performances of work by Bill Evans, Federico Mompou, and Paul Buchanan (AKA The Blue Nile.)

There's a rich cross-section of classical and jazz influences, and even elements of folk in these improvisations. The variety and accessibility of the music on this album could easily allow it to be filed under Jazz or New Age.

This album is very much about expressing one's voice through an instrument. The works do not leap out at the listener, but rather evolve, with a realtime sense of performance/composition. The detail and warm ambience of the recording takes the listener into the process of bringing new music out of a Steinway Concert Grand.

The recording was done at high resolution, with a great set of microphones. The interested listener is encouraged to check out the www.bobgoldmusic.com website, where there are additional details and downloads of greater fidelity.

You won't find a better collection of music than in this CD, which features one artist's amazing vision. What a privilege to be thrilled and moved in so many ways as you journey through this wonderful CD. This music is better than much of the movie music we hear, and I can only hope that if enough of us pass on the word about Bob Gold, he will get the recognition he so richly deserves.

  • Richly-textured, evocative musical stories
    author: Craig Barshinger

Departures has become my favorite CD. The selections are more like musical stories. There is an absence of the feeling the artist is trying show off his technical mastery, but rather that he is a master story teller, and I am huddled around the primal campfire as he spins his tales. It is very intimate listening. I absolutely cannot categorize this style of music. It has such integrity that I am left with the impression that it is part of a great class of music that I was simply never exposed to, -Craig Barshinger
