ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes

Folk meets Jazz and World Music. Sudden Light is a combination of outstanding musicians coming together. With impressive creativity, Bob uses resourceful and innovative stylings on mandolin, acoustic and electric guitar and performs a wide blend of original music. Guitarist Randy Roos, cellist Mick Fritzsching, bassist David Saltman, keyboardist Jeanne Ricks and percussionist Jerry Leake fill out this perceptive project whose sounds reflect the visual images of Bob’s compositions and paintings.

Born north of Boston, Massachusetts, Bob began his musical career in New York and Boston/Cambridge area coffeehouses and college concerts in the late 1960s. In addition to his solo career, he has shared the stage with founding member of the Jefferson Airplane, Jorma Kaukonen, Bonnie Raitt, The Everly Brothers, Pentangle, Tim Hardin, John Prine, Neil Young, Buddy Miles, Taj Mahal, Dion, Leo Kottke, Livingston Taylor, Steve Goodman, Jay Leno, Jerry Jeff Walker, and many others. As a free-lance guitarist and mandolinist, he has performed on stage with Tommy Makem, Nanci Griffith, Larry Coryell, Mary Travers, and Tom and Harry Chapin, among others. He has appeared on recordings with Columbia artists John Compton of Appaloosa, Andy Pratt, Eugene Friesen of the Paul Winter Consort and Bill Staines. Quoting from the entertainment newspaper, Variety, of his solo performance at the legendary Greenwich Village folk club, Gerde’s Folk City, "His work on six-string acoustic guitar stands out in jazz instrumentals. . . . McCarthy seems unhampered by delivering solo stylings usually associated with combos.” Kirb. VARIETY

Guitar Tour de Force
One might quibble with how much of Sudden Light is Folk or Jazz, or even World, but there cannot be the slightest doubt as to this CD being an absolute delight. With his latest, McCarthy has brought along his extensive musical tool box and built a superbly intricate guitar soundscape. Ever-smart when it comes to putting just the right musicians together, Bob is again right in his element, crafting and delivering precisely what he had in mind. And deliver they do, the currents of each of his songs taking the mind this way and that, as if along a sparkling forest stream, warm and inviting. Yet they won't lull, not with bob's cool hooks splashing out like clear water on smooth rocks.
Professional musicians, particularly guitarists, will hear Sudden Light and acknowledge that 'this is how it's done.' Music lovers will be content with a guaranteed listening treat.

Grammy-worthy recording
Bob McCarthy is one of those rare musicians/artists who just keeps moving higher into the stratosphere.
McCarthy's new CD "Sudden Light" is a masterpiece! Bob's acoustic & electric guitar playing has earned him the nickname the "Carlos Santana of New England." Bob's brilliant and inventive mandolin playing is icing on the cake.
Bob is the most inventive and daring guitarist and on the scene today!

The top-notch band that McCarthy has assembled for this recording takes it into the stratosphere! The recording's
Surround Sound feel and exquisite mixing and mastering beautifully highlights the superb musicianship of the
bass, drums, percussion and cello work. Bob McCarthy's "Sudden Light" is a Grammy-worthy recording.

Take a moment and check out Track 6 "Trans Electric." Bob's playing is as inventive and majestic as MIles Davis on "Bitches Brew."

More and More
In his new CD, Bob McCarthy gives us more and more of his musical imagination and awesome musicianship. He's always been a masterful soloist, but in Sudden Light fills out the sound with other great players who bring all kinds of new and exciting ideas to the music. There is so much to listen to here; it'll take many hearings to find and trace all the threads. Thanks, Bob, for this new beautiful work! It brings me to a peaceful place and makes me grateful to be here.
