Bob Rea is a singer-songwriter from Durango, Colorado. His first album, Black Highway was released in 2003, and debuted in the top twenty on the Roots radio chart. He's now at work on his second album, which is slated for release in Spring 2009.
The strength of Bob's songwriting is recognizable to anyone who's heard him play live or listened to his album. His songs are distinctively well-crafted and poetic. His style has drawn comparisons to Johnny Cash and Leonard Cohen, but ultimately his songs are all their own.
Bob's first album, Black Highway, showcased songs he'd written over the course of thirty years. According to Chris K. of Big Bender records, "Black Highway is an independent masterpiece equal in tone, texture, and meaning to more recent recordings by Marty Stuart, Rodney Crowell, Dave Alvin, and J.J. Cale...it is full of graphic imagery, produced to rural red dirt perfection...and easily the best pure Americana release I've heard to date... If you're an Americana fan and you don't buy this cd, you're just plain crazy."Black Highway was also well-received overseas, particularly in the UK. The Lord Litter radio show called the album "the coolest outlaw-ish, Southern-rock-spiced release in ages."
While some artists maintain a consistent theme or style throughout their careers, Bob describes his process as a continual evolution. While many of the songs on his first album were derived from his experiences, Bob's new material moves in another direction. "I feel like the songs I'm finishing now are more universal, and reflect less of my own life," he says. "I'm much more interested in writing about the human condition, and about the major changes that are happening right now in the United States and the world. I think there is massive shift happening in our values and our way of life, and a lot of that is filtered through my songwriting."
Bob splits his time between Nashville and Colorado. In Colorado, he builds custom log homes, and his work has been featured in Log Home Living magazine.

Black Highway is an independent masterpiece equal in tone, texture, and meaning to more recent recordings by Marty Stuart (Pilgrim), Rodney Crowell (Fate's Right Hand), Dave Alvin (Ashgrove), and J.J. Cale (To Tulsa and Back) ... it is full of graphic imagery, produced to rural red dirt perfection ... and easily the BEST pure Americana release I've heard to date here at CDBaby. If you're an Americana fan and you don't buy this cd, you're just plain crazy.
