Music Review by Bill Binkelman : New Age Reporter : October 2006 BODHI TRANS UKRAINE Crystal Wind Music (2006) The last album I heard by Bodhi (who was recording under the name Kevin Setchko at the time) was his minimalist new age tone poem album, CLOUD ETCHINGS. To say that TRANS UKRAINE marks a departure from that release may be the understatement of the year! While Bodhi’s great flute work is still in ample evidence, TRANS UKRAINE is a ramped up blast of superbly chilled electronica (with traces of world fusion now and then), with the artist marrying his flutes (and some piano) to an impressive array of synths, beats, and electronics. This CD is highly recommended if you love chill-out music, regardless of whether you’re a flute fan or not. Production and engineering are textbook as well. Bodhi collaborated with two Ukrainians (Igor Gromadskiy on the track “Crimea” and Dimitris Krist on “Kiev” and “Odessa”) who each play keyboards and Englishman Alex Newman served as producer and arranger and did the final keyboard mixing. While there is no denying the fact that Bodhi’s flute features prominently throughout the recording, there are some long stretches where it’s not heard at all. Unless you more or less hate flute music, you’re going to like (or even love) this recording if you enjoy chill-out or electronica. Of course, that’s from my perspective and I greatly enjoy flute music, so there’s that to take into consideration as well. Putting it bluntly, TRANS UKRAINE knocked my socks off and I can only hope Bodhi will favor us again sometime down the road with another excursion on the electronica highway. Bill Binkelman Music Reviewer New Age Reporter Notes and Impressions from the journey.... This project was conceived and birthed in Ukraine in September, 2004, when I met Dmitris Krist, a producer living in Kiev. With his wife , Natali Dali, translating (he spoke only Russian) we recorded trax for 2 of the pieces, "Kiev" and "Odessa". Through an unusual series of events I was led to another producer, Igor Gromadskiy, with whom I recorded the 3rd piece, "Crimea". Over the next 2 years the vision was brilliantly realized and completed through the masterful production skills of Alex Newman, an English producer I met in California while he was producing a CD with the world dance electronica band, "Medicine Drum". Finally, the CD cover graphics were done by Brigitte Behr, a German graphic artist, living in Paris, France. This CD is truly the fruit of an international collaborative effort. -Bodhi CD Liner Notes

Trans Ukraine

“Trans Ukraine” is my favorite CD of the past few years. I listen to it often, and it continues to intrigue me, taking me to new places, entrancing me. If you enjoy music that takes you on a journey, don’t miss this one. The acoustic balance between instruments, beats, and harmonies is simply superb. I don’t gush easily, but this CD is a must-have in any collection of jazz, ambient, acoustic, trance, or music-to-make-love-by.

Trans Ukraine, transfixing, transformative
author: Peter Meyer
When I heard the first few notes through earphones at a new age shop in Vancouver, I immediately knew this was a very special and deep piece. I bought it and have listened to it at least once a week ever since. All the other reviews are spot-on, describing the juxtaposition of the soft yet powerful melodic flute, against a background of rich textures, rhythms, and sub-melodies. The effect of this is that it energizes and inspires, yet simultaneously seems to alter the brain waves into a more harmonic, deep and relaxed/aware state. This is clearly more than ambient music my friends! The person who posted about getting it after 100 listening sessions had a similar experience - as I listen each time, another layer and dimension of this opens up, and amazingly, I keep hearing new things and having a new experience with this music. The really high quality of the production adds to the sensuality and connection (it sounds incredibly present and alive on my hi-fi, great dynamics and the flute is full bodied - nice pun - and warm). This is a must have CD for its music alone. Add to that the ability to use the music as a doorway to spirit, and it is invaluable. With gratitude to BODHI!

When i first heard this CD, I felt taken on a magic ride into my senses. The flute together with the underbeat carried lifted me away. The next day I went to buy it and listened to it the entire day. This CD blends masterfully the heart energy of the flute and the soul of the beat. If you love captivating melody and depth, you will love this.
