Album Notes

Dear listeners,
The Boiled Buzzards have not been active as a band for several years now. In fact, the band changed often over its 10 year lifespand. We have all gone different paths since this, our first recording, but you still ask for it and the music is timeless as old time music can be. So, here it is for you to enjoy as a CD. Enjoy the music and Play Nice!
Dan Levenson 8-7-07

Salt and Grease is The Boiled Buzzards’ first album. This is Stringband music with style and drive. Harmonica adds a special old flavor ala Dr. Humphry Bate and his Possum Hunters. If you like Old Time, you'll love this. One warning, we are told that cruise control will save you bucks if you like to listen while driving (or you may want to get to your destination faster than you thought).

Original Liner Notes: The Boiled Buzzards is a fiery old-time band from the Cleveland area. Playing together since 1988 and steeped in old-time traditional music, they’re known for their unique sound and have played for dances in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Morgantown and Columbus, and for numerous events in the area. The band consists of Dave Rice on harmonica, Dan Levenson on banjo, Joe Collins on guitar and Ruth Kass on bass.

This tape consists primarily of tunes which are known as square; that is, having two parts of equial length. Square tunes are usually preferred for square dances and cloggins. The tunes that are not square on this tape are three 3-part tunes: 3 Thin Dimes, Little Billy Wilson and Bull at the Wagon; and two crooked tunes: Milwaukee Blues and Rochester Schottische.

Southtown is a new old-time tune written and fiddled by Buzzard Dave Rice. Dan Levenson’s singing is heard on Charlie Poole’s Milwaukee Blues and June Apple. Dan also plays fiddle on Icy Mountain and Bull at the Wagon.
