Album Notes

Bonnie Nichols is a singer/songwriter from Soldotna, Alaska. She is published on two Grammy-finalist children’s albums; “A Child’s Gift of Lullabyes,” and “Snuggle Up; A Gift of Songs for Sweet Dreams,” with J. Aaron Brown of Nashville, TN.

She is a recipient of a Wolf Trap Silver Medallion Award for a children’s project, “Hunk-Ta-Bunk-Ta-Bed,” written and recorded with Katherine Dines of Denver, Co. One of her contributions, “Dino-Story” has been published in Sing 2006 a songbook and CD for school children in Australia.

She has also been recognized at the state and national level for her contributions of music related to the healthcare field. Her song, “New Beginning” included on her latest release titled I’ve Got Something To Say, was written to highlight her experience with organ/tissue donation and “Kids Otter Be Immunized” was written for the State of Alaska’s childhood immunization campaign. She also won the first Alaska Public Radio Song of the Year contest in 1997 for her song, “She Don’t Hear the Thunder” describing a woman who found her way through a relationship riddled with domestic violence. Bonnie has also been honored by the State of Alaska as a First Lady’s Volunteer of the Year.

I’ve Got Something to Say is a collection of songs; each of which contains a powerful message. While we’ve all struggled with our involvement in the war, Bonnie wrote a love song to our troops titled, “Red, White and Blue.” Months after the 2004 tsunami disaster in Asia, she tried to explore the meaning of “Grace” in our everyday lives. Watching her son raise his children inspired her to write “Family Matters.” In “Turn the Quiet Up,” Bonnie writes from her heart about the need to slow down and reconnect with those we love. When she lost her husband to a sudden heart attack, she wrote “New Beginning” to honor him and to describe her experience with organ and tissue donation.

When not performing and writing, she works as a hospital Marketing and Public Relations Director.

a voice like an angel!

I'm not usually a fan of country music enjoying classical music more but when I heard the voice on this CD I was hooked. She has the voice of an angel. And she writes the songs herself! How wonderful Bonnie shares her poetry and inner feelings with us in song. She is an unique individual.

Bonnie Nichols is an amazing talent, and her newest CD I’ve Got Something to Say is a treat for the ear and for the heart. “Red, White and Blue Over You” is likely to become the defining song for the home-front of the Iraq War. But in the tradition of Eva Cassidy, Bonnie refuses to be pigeonholed. Just when you start to peg her as a country singer, she wails out some gospel on “They Took My Lord Away,” then hits the jazz scene with “Straight to My Heart.” Then she touches your soul with “Grace” and New Beginnings.” These are songs that don’t leave your head when the CD is over!

I like it!

This is a great CD. There is such a wide variety of styles here, and Bonnie Nichols nails all of them. She deftly addresses the controversy of war while being supportive of the troops, feels right at home with a swingin' gospel choir, is equally comfortable with a well-penned 40's style tune, and has incredible insight and sensitivity on (my favorite)Turn the Quiet Up. Excellent songwriting all the way around and a beautiful voice, too. I highly recommend the album.
