Album Notes
Seattle, Washington's multifaceted music scene features BONRUD: an exciting melodic rock project, led by guitarist and producer Paul Bonrud. BONRUD's debut album shines with eleven tracks of soaring vocals and melodic guitar leads that are unmistakably influenced by Journey and Foreigner. Paul is a multi-talented musician with extensive recording, producing, and performance experience. He began his music career in Minneapolis, Minnesota as a session guitarist before moving to Seattle, where he met veteran vocalist David Hendricks shortly after beginning to demo songs for a new CD. "I was blown away by Dave's voice which sounds amazingly similar to Lou Gramm." recalls Paul. Thus the writing and recording began. When it came time to lay down the drums, Paul called on the recognized talents of session drummer Paul Higgins. The two met while playing sessions and gigs for several other Seattle-based recording artists. Impressively, Paul Bonrud played most of the other instruments on the BONRUD album, which he produced and engineered, in addition to writing the majority of the material. "Producing and recording songs requires the ability to visualize the overall big picture of the song while also maintaining great attention to detail." says Paul of his philosophy. This is reflected throughout the album which was mixed by legendary six-time Grammy winning producer Keith Olsen. Keith has produced albums for Whitesnake, Foreigner, Ozzy Osbourne, Night Ranger, Sammy Hagar, Rick Springfield, Fleetwood Mac, and many others. Paul divulges, "I was really fortunate to have Keith's invaluable assistance on this project. He gave me many great suggestions along the way and when it came time to mix the songs, I turned the reigns over to him. I learned so much and made a great friend in the process." Melodic rock fans will be enchanted by newcomer BONRUD.

Great debut album from Seattle based melodic rock band!
Paul Bonrud has spent the best part of a couple of years of his life writing and recording this - his debut album under the Bonrud moniker. In making the album he had guidance from legendary producer Keith Olsen, who mixed the album. Paul plays a good deal of the instruments himself, contributing with guitars, bass, keyboards, backing vocals and percussion. Also featured as part of Bonrud are lead vocalist Dave Hendricks and drummer Paul Higgins. Bonrud plays a very pure blend of melodic rock and AOR, with a mix of guitars and keyboards supporting some fine 80's melodic rock songs. The band could compare to the sound of Lou Gramm and Foreigner and Journey - with the album cover another nod to the influence of AOR's #1 band. I can also hear a comparison to early Richard Marx, especially from singer Hendricks, but also including the band's overall smooth and polished sound. Backing vocals are well used throughout and give already strong choruses an extra push. The album has quite a varied range of tracks. The opening track Leap Of Faith is a breezy feel good rocker with a good tempo, whereas The Phoenix the follows is a darker, heavier and slower track. Desperate Heart provides the third change in a row, in being a first rate AOR ballad with a wonderfully soulful vocal and some fine slow guitar playing. I've Changed is another light uptempo rocker with a great chorus and Give Me A Chance is perfect early Richard Marx pop/rock. Take Me Home is another ballad, but more soft pop in nature. Another strong chorus helps the track stand out. Date With Destiny and Look Me In The Eyes are both enjoyable guitar fuelled rockers. Once In A Lifetime is another good uptempo melodic rocker with good harmonies and a memorable chorus. Live Your Dreams is a lighter, acoustic driven number that has a certain classic REO Speedwagon/Boston feel to it. Hollywood Movie Star closes the album with one of the album's best tracks. A passionate vocal fits perfectly into this big Journey styled storyline track that is perfect to end the album with.

The Bottom Line:
A very good quality album made even more impressive by the fact it's a debut release. The sound of the album isn't quite major label quality, but the mix is perfectly balanced and the songs are all highly enjoyable. Any band would be proud to release such a strong album and this sets Bonrud up to be one to watch over the next few years. One for the classic AOR fans out there.

Overall rating 88%, Songs 91%, Sound 85%;
Essential for fans of Richard Marx, Lou Gramm, Outland;

70's Kick ass Rock, with 80's Blazing guitar.
In the world of todays directionless bands, with cookie cutter images, we are finally introduced to an artist who gets it right. Taking the arena rock songwriting in the vein of Journey,Kansas and Toto...adding the Metal flash guitar playing of Eddie, Satch, and Schon. Bonrud has a very strong debut that will hold its own with any of your classic rock favorites.

Top notch playing and songwriting!
This fantastic melodic rock CD reminds me a lot of Def Leppard or Dokken. It moves effortlessly from the softest ballads to soaring rock-n-roll heights.

Dave Hendricks provides solid, powerful vocals. Paul Higgins is the greatest drummer you've never heard of but you will! Paul Bonrud's playing is simply stunning. He has a great sense of melody and knows when it's time to tear it up!

The songwriting and production are as good as anything you'll find on a major label release. This CD was mixed by Keith Olsen (Foreigner, Pat Benatar, Sammy Hagar, Whitesnake, Ozzy Osbourne). It's great to see him back doing the music he does so well. Buy this CD, you won't regret it!

This is an AWESOME release! Each song is filled with hooks, and you'll be singing along with this album in no time! Paul Bonrud's guitar playing is amazing... he easily ranks up with Neal Schon and the other greats of the genre!The real standout for me is David Hendricks GREAT voice! I need to find out what else David has sung on because he is simply amazing! I HIGHLY recomend this CD to anyone looking for catchy AOR releases!
