Album Notes

It’s the ageless struggle between self and selfless. Between what we need to do and what we want to do. Between what we are and what we should be.

Out of this dichotomy flows the inspiration for the new Boochie Shepherd album “Vertical.”

“That inner conflict is something that I battle personally,” says frontman Brandon McCaghren, “and I know it’s something that a lot of other people are fighting, too. I want to help them see that they aren’t alone in the fight.”

From the opening line of the album, that message is crystal clear:

You say you want a revolution…
Well, it starts right here.
But from the looks of the situation
Your feelings are unclear…

The layered guitars of the title track and other rockers such as “Pull My String” build the perfect foundation for McCaghren’s vocals to deliver the musical equivalent of a punch to the stomach.

In the emotive, acoustic guitar based track, “All the King’s Horses,” McCaghren laments the fact that so many of us have failed to do the very thing we were created to do, and in so doing, have left a hungry world starving in our wake.

Who’ll save the Kingdom from
All the King’s men?

“That song was difficult for me because it is so self-indicting. It’s just so easy to become the very things you stand against if you aren’t careful,” says McCaghren.

Armed with transparency and honesty, Boochie Shepherd has become a favorite of Christian music fans, both young and old, who have seen them share the stage with artists such as Aaron Shust, The Afters and Hyper Static Union.

Drummer Heath Hood says, “I always imagined that our music was really relevant to young people, so to see parents and even grandparents embrace it is overwhelming.”

That universal appeal is clear in the infectious hook of tracks like “Plain and Simple” and “Perfect Little World” and in the thundering work of guitarist Brandon Denton in “Brighten Your Eyes.”

“We just want to be regular people with something really important to say,” states bassist Jeff Hubbard. “Our generation holds the power to change the world, and we want to wake them up to that fact.”

A great CD. I got it as a birthday gift for my son, an aspiring guitarist. His favorites are Vertical and the extras at the end of the CD. A nice range of musical styles, southern rock to acoustic, with a great message. Keep up the great work!

This was the best Cd I ever remember purchasing. I love the contrast between the rock and the slow tempoed songs. It is very inspirational. I love it.

Musically, the album is very strong. Most of the rhythms will leave you tapping your foot or playing the "faux" drums on your steering wheel (if your driving and listening in your car of course). Make sure you listen to the lead guitar through the album. From the subtle riffs played in the background to the loud, up front solos, it will definitely keep your attention. The album starts loud and strong with three tracks that boast some strong guitar work and the message of the entire album. I personally enjoyed the 50s'esque be bopping, displayed in "Give". It's unique additions like this that place Boochie in a different class than just "rock". The album slows down for the first worship song in "All is Forgotten", a steadily rising song with a powerful message. The album takes another turn with the moody track "Brighten your eyes" and then touches absolute brilliance with "All the Kings Horses". I could write an entire review on this song alone. The delivery, the message, this song is what music is capable of accomplishing. The album smoothly moves back into its rock phase with "Plain and Simple" and "I'll Come Around" and then hits another high with two back-to-back praise songs "What should I fear" and "I am Safe". The use of female vocalists in these two songs is extremely refreshing and takes these tracks to another level. The simplistic poignancy of these tracks continues to show the range Boochie is capable of. The Chorus singing at the end of "What should I fear" is the strong point here and will definitely have you singing along. The album closes out its rock side with the track "Pull my String", which is a fitting song to showcase the bands energy. The soothing track "Voice" closes the album peacefully, a perfect reminder of the amazing lyrics and compilations Boochie can put together. As a bonus, a "remix" of "All the Kings Horses" is placed at the end of the album, more piano driven this time. To me this shows what an incredible song this is because of its ability to remain powerful anyway that it is performed. (Is it obvious that I absolutely love "All the Kings Horses"?)
