notes

Boogiewall Soundsystem is a collective with a deep dub consciousness bridging pop, electronica and reggae with strong songwriting and beautiful vocals.

Tanya Kornobis, aka; tk2000, (DJ, producer, composer and vocalist) has found her home in the beautiful Madawaska Valley in Canada, after many years as part of the Toronto music scene since the late eighties. Coming from a classical background, she has studied piano, flute, clarinet, saxophone and voice.

Her fascination with global rhythms and her interest in community grew and flourished with several trips to Jamaica, Cuba, California, Hawaii, Europe and Africa. Her spiritual journeys lead her through many places, and in 1991 she returned to Canada and formed her first band Groovelust, which became a CFNY New Music finalist. Shortly afterwards she co-founded her next project,The Skanksters, which rehearsed and played their expansive repertoire for over 10 years at clubs and festivals in Canada and the U.S., alongside some of Reggae’s best, including Freddie McGregor, the Reggae Cowboys, Hugh Masekela, Sister Carol and the Skatalites to name a few. It was during those years that Tanya would fine-tune her magical gift as live performer as well as producer. The Skanksters would go on to record their first full-length album, Dub Cookery (Simmerdown Records) and appeared on numerous compilations.

In 1996 the seed was planted for a dub collective that could unite Toronto's diverse musical talents, and that concept blossomed into Boogiewall Soundsystem.

The production team of Sean Richards and tk2000 started a long-term weekly residency at the Lava nightclub in Toronto, Canada, where they experimented with combining DJ culture and live music along with the rhythms of Dub, Reggae, Electronica, Jazz and eastern percussion. Her global spiritual journey then led Tanya to the West Coast and later to Los Angeles. It was a meeting of musical minds when Tanya met with the Mad Professor during a tour with Lee "Scratch" Perry, and they agreed that a future dub was in order for the newly evolving Boogiewall Soundsystem album.

On her trip back to Toronto in 2002 for the release of Boogiewall Soundsystem’s Confide/My Promise 12" (Play Records) she expanded her musical roots by connecting with the many talented artists of her global family, and started recording, tracking, layering and editing for the upcoming album Super My Own Band. in 2004 Boogiewall Soundsystem released a local edit and are now ready in conjunction with Ohm Grown Records, Orange Record Label and Universal Music Canada for the global release of Super My Own Band, an album that bridges Pop, RnB, electronic music and Reggae with their signature style: strong songwriting and thought provoking vocals couched in warm and textured rhythms.

Tanya’s passion for music comes from a very special place in her heart where rhythm and melody unite to create a force that inspires all in our ever-changing global community. On her journey as singer, composer, performer and storyteller, Tanya is moved by the harmonies and melodies of the oceans of life, and continues to captivate audiences globally with her performances. The haunting chants and celebratory melodies are drawn from her eastern roots and her familiarity with the one-drop meditation: the journey into dub consciousness.

The magic of her music is inspired by simple mantras, in her own words: “Love Love Love Music Music Music”.

Reviews:

TRIBE MAGAZINE:

This work seems to be the sonic equivalent of an interdisciplinary academic program. Cross-pollination between a number of sounds has occurred, resulting in esoteric down tempo with a dub reggae sensibility. Genre bending, where overground pop influences meet electronic music head on. Live jazz instrumentation on track number four was nicely done.

The instrumental scratch fest on track number eight gives us a glimpse into something that should be revisited and expanded upon. Tanya Kornobis' beautiful vocals are couched in warm, textured rhythms. Comparisons to Massive Attack are easy to make but largely unjustified - the Boogiewall Soundsystem has carved its own sound out of an open-source framework of reggae, ska, dub, house, and jazz.

NOW MAGAZINE:

The Boogiewall Soundsystem function more as a collective than a normal band, seeking out collaborations with DJs and dance music producers as well as MCs and horn sections. This disc features remixes by UK dub hero the Mad Professor and a house mix by local boy Rob Nice.

Fans of the Mad Professor's dub mix of Massive Attack's Protection album should be especially interested in this project. While Boogiewall Soundsystem are much more rooted in reggae rhythms than in Massive Attack, the collision of musical influences is common ground. The song that the Mad Professor decided to rework, Confide In You, is one of their least reggae-influenced, and much closer to Massive Attack's dreamy downtempo.

"It grew out of a passion for other kinds of music," explains vocalist and keyboard player Tanya Kornobis. "I love dancing and going out and listening to house as well as dub. We wanted to merge what we've been doing really well for a long time, which is dub, with all our other interests."

Many Toronto bands have been sucked into the trap of trying to reproduce authentically a style and sound from another place and era without taking into account their own musical history and tastes. At a certain point, the desire to express yourself more honestly as a musician takes hold.

"Our roots have always been in early-70s roots reggae, but we're playing now, and it seems closed-minded to be traditionalists about it," guitarist and co-producer Sean Richards acknowledges. "I went to Japan last summer and was really encouraged by the stuff coming out of there -- Japanese domestically produced R&B-reggae hybrids that you'd never imagine would even be heard over there and have made number 24 on the charts.

Reinventing yourself and the way you make music isn't easy, but advances in home recording technology make it much more affordable than ever before to try out infinite possibilities.

"We're not in a hurry. It's a labor of love," says Kornobis. "Our first CD as the Skanksters took six weeks to do, while this has taken two years. We've been working on it really hard, getting the sounds exactly the way we want them.

"We're not settling for anything less than exactly how we want it."

PEACE MAGAZINE:

From full band reggae and ska to down-tempo studio dub, the debut album from Toronto's Boogiewall Soundsystem, 'Super My Own Band" is an ambitious and satisfying endeavor that finds vocalist Tanya Kornobis and crew unbacked by the power of their recent mad professor remix but still indexing Morcheeba or Massive Attack.

  • No way! Ooooh. Serious chills.

. So fresh. Great everything so far....... Amazing build - amazing vocal - amazing horns. Really really great. Like... Sade and early Specials blended in an elagant way. Killer guitar tones. Man I hate to say it but this is just too hip and original for the modern Pop format. I don't want to make any suggestions because I love the way it is. More groovy and dancy' than nearly anything at Top 10. It's tough when you really dig something that is just simply amazing but is on it's own planet. The best I can do is give a great review.

  • You got me...
    author: Diane Wayne

Intriguing introduction. Good choice of sounds. Very original mix of sounds and styles going on throughout the whole number. I like the Bossa Nova feeling and the sound of the female vocals. Great job of laying, providing a very laid back feel amidst the business of the track. So much going on, but it's very receivable, not overwhelming. Even when the male vocal rap comes in, it's smooth. Intelligent lyrics. Very entertaining.

  • Groovy and addictive performance art style pop...
    author: Chrasna

The introduction grabbed my interest immediately. I love the salsa rhythm with the modern keyboard patches. The vocals were very performance art style, much like Laurie Anderson. I loved the way the horn and other patches created mood accents, instead of fighting for attention. The composition reminded me of the band WAR. Many simple little sequences complimenting each other to form one big complex yet easily flowing orchestration.

  • Cool Quirky Space Pop
    author: Ajak

Very interesting blend of quirk pop and classical influences. I thought I was in for the usual trendy pop tune but what a surprise. This original presentation with its imaginative use of instruments was a treat to listen to. String quartet laced through chorus sections, while little keyboard highlights wove in and out. Nice strait as hell vocal delivery, plain and innocent out there for all to see. Nice work people.

  • I want a signed copy of your album!

And what a great hook. you should have a record deal. this is the kind of music that I look for. You should do some more torchy stuff. It strikes a chord within my heart. steve stephenson

  • Simply beautiful
    author: Carayoung from Dallas, Texas

Beautiful vocal with sensual harmonies. Lush instrumentation...love the horns. I feel like I am sitting at a tropical resort and should be sipping on a pina colada. Wonderfully produced from the rhythm section all the way to the vocals and synths. I don't have any input to change anything because it is just perfect the way it is. You go girl!!

  • YEAH!!!!
    author: qualco99

I LOVE the arrangements, great vocal effects. Great unique instruments. It sounds like a female Daniel Bedingfield with a little flare of Dido, and a little bit of Jewel mixed in. It's flawless! qualco99

  • Sexy Tribal Dub
    author: Billymoonchild

This song is a delight to listen to if you like Afro-tribal beats, reggae-style dub horns and carefully underplayed female vocals with harmonies. The arrangement has clearly been well-researched and attentively balanced to give all instruments a useful role and to maintain the listener's interest. A well-placed break around the 2:45 mark gives the song a new lease of life as it moves into its final phase. A must!

Top-notch and groovy This is top stuff. A well-programmed, intricate groove kicks it all along; the piano is particularly good. the lead vocal is excellent, and very atmospherically backed up by the backing vocals. Always full of interest, the introduction of the brilliant trumpet part is particularly inspired. All this great work supports a really good song with a catchy, hooky chorus. Great work!

  • Outta your way!
    author: wowspeak

This is haunting and lonely and beautiful all at once. A shimmering montage of sounds surrounding an epochronous singer of no limited means. Strings and keys keep the ear engaged on a sonic level and the rhythm section is right on. . Lot's of talent here keep at it! wowspeak

honestly you have my attention immediately...nice groove. massive attack comes to mind, though the vocals are their own thing. i like the textures that support the vocals, and now the reggae rhythm, layered guitars...good atmosphere. it's crazy enough for me to really approve! it's mixed well too, panning nicely and each textured part provides just what is required and nothing over-the-top. I commend the production and overall sound. You have a good thing going here! and not at all amateur. thank you

Making me Jealous This is awesome, congrats on this one. It is one I would aspire to create myself. The female vocals are hypnotic and alluring. You have made a song I come to expect from the pop music genre in this year of 2004, but too often IÍm reviewing songs fit for country or the 80's. Again thanks for the great tune and the chance to review it... Aaron Hope says: A++++

I'm in love It's like Bjork with structure and the lyrics/mood remind me of The The. (my absolute favorite band). I just noticed the reggae feel. Had to go back to see where it happened. Changed the feel right under my nose. I love this. The vocals and production are excellent. Wishing you all the luck.

Immediate introduction of vocal grabs attention. The voice stays clear and forward in the mix, helping the listener to engage with the lyrics as well as the overall mood of the piece. Delay could be used a little more selectively - the singer's voice is certainly strong enough to stand alone Nice clean production and use of a reggae-style beat is quite unusual and effective. The short guitar solo with wah is a pleasant surprise. Fascinating ending - of course it sounds like another beginning... Overall, a stong and carefully-crafted composition and performance

  • a great record!

Here we have yet another Canadian artist that is doing things as well as or better than similar artists elsewhere. What is in the water up there? Maybe its that eclectic mix of cultures - like London, UK - which is unique to them in the Tdot. Maybe its just that the pot is better, the beer is stronger, and they just get on with things and don't worry if it is commercial enough. Its like that K-os record - who'd have EVER made a record like that in the US? All I know is that supermyownband is an amazing piece of music. Although a reggae inflected pop album (you know, with songs and everything) it sometimes feels like more than that - like a deeper, more thoughtful older brother coming home from college at Christmas break and letting you hear the cool stuff he bought in the indie shops of NYC. This record jumps all over the place, yet it keeps itself upright somehow so you always know that it is the same people making it. Organic, with strong electronic colours showing through the mud splattered exterior - kinda biotech if you wll. Love the sounds, love the production and love the singing. And, oh yes, as it is supposed to be a DUB album after all, love the FX... especially because they never overdo it. The song (over the bassline) is king here, just like all the best Jamaican music of years gone by that informs this record. Informs is a good word - no one can accuse anyone in Boogiewall Soundsystem of ripping off a sound. Rather, they have found a way to be TRUE and still show us where they come from... and they come from TO baby, where reggae, hip hop and R+B culture meet face to face at the bus stop on their way to the school of life!
