Every good indie label starts with a compilation ... a year and three releases later, Boompa Records brings you Boompa Volume 1. Featuring previously unreleased tracks from the label's entire roster - along with a few essential additions from artists close to the hearts of the kids at the label office - Boompa Volume 1 is the ultimate introductory collection to one of the most innovative new labels in North America. Highlights include a new track from ex-Grapes of Wrath singer/songwriter Kevin Kane, indie-pop veterans The Salteens, underground cult faves The Lucksmiths, new wave pop-punkers Sekiden alongside exciting newcomers Billy + the Lost Boys, Run Chico Run, The Dudes, The Ladies & Gentlemen (ex-Carnations), and Natasha Thirsk. From wistful indie-rock and shiny pop sensibilities to cinematic electro-ambience and the raw honesty of straight-up punk, Boompa Volume 1 serves as a must-have for fans of independent music and as priority advance listening for people interested in what Boompa Records has coming out in Fall 2004/Spring 2005.

There isn't a dud on the disc!
author: Stuart Derdeyn (publication: The Province)
Samplers can move beyond mere intros to a label and be killer CDs in their own right. Such is the case with the first from Vancouver's Boompa, a power-pop clearing house that deserves far greater recognition. Kicking off with a rocking 1:57 courtesy "Alexander" from Australia's Sekiden, the disc moves through enticing quirk (Run Chico Run), great punk/pop (Billy + the Lost Boys), wonderful electronica (Circlesquare) and a 10:35 opus from label founding act The Salteens. There isn't a dud cut on the disc and all make for great cruising tunes. 4 out of 5 stars.
