Album Notes

This CD has been a long time in coming. Sometimes you can't control the course of events a process takes. The earliest of the cuts on Rap-CD In Blue was written about 15 years ago. Another one a year or two later, a trickle here, an inspiration there...like many artists, I have notebooks full of poems, songs and compositions in various phases of incompletion. It appears to be part of many artists' makeup to have trouble 'finishing'. The bad news is, we 'lose' some precious years along the twisting path of the maturation process; the good news is, there's always still time, and the diversions that steer us away from finishing are an equal part of the creative process.

During the years in between writing the songs and raps on this CD, I wasn't just sitting around watching the paint grow...or is that the grass dry? I was studying Chinese in Ithaca, NY and in Beijing, smack in the middle of the TianAnMen student uprising; I was working for the United Nations in New York and on overseas mission in Cambodia; I was celebrating Carnival in Trinidad & Tobago, one of the wildest parties in the world; I was interpreting for an importer of exotic goods in remote minority villages of China; I was learning to farm and become self-sufficient in Appalachian Ohio; I was working as a medical transcriptionist, a technical writer, a commercial voice talent; I was getting a Fulbright Fellowship to learn Indonesian in North Sulawesi, Indonesia; I was teaching English at the University of Macau, near Hong Kong, where I still am; I was setting up an Internet-based import-export business dealing in fine Balinese handicrafts (www. bali-export-import.com)...

And so, you see, my time has not been wasted. And all along, I never lost contact with my desire to keep returning to my Mus(e)ic. And now, all these years and miles down the road, the time was right,and the result is my debut offering, Rap-CD In Blue. The tortuosness of the road to get to this point has not diminished the joy I take in seeing my CD through to completion--on the contrary, it has put me in rhapsody. Another good thing about having taken so long is that there's plenty more material where this came from...
