notes
Booze Monkey is a two-piece acoustic-blues band based in Winchester, VA. Former Sanity Check Musec, Inc. (SCM) solo-recording artist BLUE sings, plays guitar and a homemade stompbox. Joel "Spyder" Ludwig plays a fretless acoustic bass.
Prior to forming Booze Monkey with Joel, BLUE had released eight independent solo records, as well as, two modern rock records with the band METAL MACHINE and two industrial dance records with his multi-media creation Church Of Chaos. BLUE is also an award winning filmmaker and the composer of many soundtrack works. He has worked in many musical genres over the years, however always found himself returning to the blues. With Booze Monkey, he has decided to stay there.
Joel Ludwig was the long-time bass player for BLUE's live band "BLUE & the JADED". The JADED performed live with many different artists in support of BLUE's solo records throughout the 1990's. Joel is a graduate of West VA University, a published poet, a longtime radio broadcast personality and SCM remix artist. He has also acted in several short films produced by SCM.
The Booze Monkey bass parts are always written and arranged with great care; they are never an afterthought. They provide a very distinct and dimensional sound to Booze Monkey's music.
BLUE (his real, legal and only name) switches between resonator guitars and standard 6-string, alternating between finger-style, bottle neck and flat pick techniques. As a long-time multiinstrumentalist, his influence on Booze Monkey arrangements are diverse and often complex, but the limited number of instruments prevents the music from becoming pompous or losing its entertaining focus.
Booze Monkey's music, and in turn it's live show, combines components of jazz, rock, folk, country, americana, bluegrass and rockabilly into a package that is succinctly blues.
Booze Monkey's live set consists of songs from throughout BLUE's catalogue, a few traditional blues covers, covers of songs written by fellow artists from the region, and new songs that are specific to the band.
Their show incorporates humor, assured musicianship, a relaxed confidence gained from decades of combined experience and most importantly a sincere respect for both the music and their audience.

Toe-tapping twisted fun!
author: Chris PlummerThis is some great original blues! Frankly, I hate most modern blues because it is the same retreaded chord progressions, and the same lyrical content.. Anyone can do that! Why don't more so called "blues" musicians do music like this? because they don't have the guts, and they hide behind their loud amplifiers.. BLUE and Mr. Ludwig to a highly original take on gut-bucket country blues: the type that hasn't been made since John Lee Hooker and Howlin' Wolf. The lyrics go way beyond the "my woman done left me" schtick that one usually equates with the blues, in fact the lyrics are some of the most inventive, though slightly out-of-left field, lyrics I have heard in a long time! I have not seen these guys live, but this disc bristles with enough energy, and I am sure they can keep the roadhouse rocking until last-call.. hats off to them!
Great guitar playing !
author: Amy HafemanI liked most of the songs and the guitar playing was great. I was wondering if you could tell me where you got the name of the CD from? My maiden name is, Gorsky and I gave the CD to my dad for his 70th birthday and we wondered if you know any Gorskys? One more thing, is there really vodka named Gorsky vodka? If so, where do you get it? Thanks Amy Hafeman
Great! Dynamic and exceptional recording...loved Surely Hang!
author: ScottI thought this CD was great. The songs blend together to give an happy feel that is rare these days - fantastic considering the songs feature lots of booze and an impending hanging! CD is worth the unique drink recipes in the CD booklet if nothing else!!!!!
Blues for a whole new generation !
author: KesterWith "Good Luck Mr. Gorsky" , Booze Monkey forge some serious new territory, ironically enough, with a time tested musical form- the blues. The acoustic duo morph a variety of genres into a brand new sound. What makes this album stand out is BLUE's shimmering production style. This CD glistens! The blues never sounded so clean. But fear not, Booze Monkey will never stand accused of being alter boys! There is a heavy dose of dirty debauchery in these tunes. With songs like "My Drinkin" and "Surely Hang" these guys apparently mean business. You'll have to decide for yourself if this is cause for concern, or just a little monkeying around. But you are sure to enjoy the ride. Joel "Spyder" Ludwig's smooth-groove-bass provides impeccable support for BLUE's six string and vocal hi-jinx! In a perfect world, BLUE could easily be the next Roy Thomas Baker, or Babyface. "JawBreaker", for example, has that ridiculously catchy hook that could easily make it a hit. But, it could take a bit of good luck for Mr. Gorsky to move the masses. Booze Monkey will probably find themselves a slightly more discerning audience. Then again, they could very well re-define the blues for a whole new generation.
Incredible and honest acoustic blues, great songs, amazing playing!
author: Aurea KotzThis CD is amazingly powerful. 16 songs, all acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, vocals and "stomp box". The songs on this disc are far better than the average modern blues disc. The production is also clearer and more honest than the norm. BLUE is not only an exceptional singer, his guitar work is astounding. He plays in just about every known guitar style, without any jarring changes, very fluid. Joel Ludwig's bass playing is intricate and consistently potent. The arrangements often leave the listener forgetting that this is only a duo. This record stands alone in my collection. It is acoustic blues but it does not give the "usual acoustic blues" feeling. It provides much more. It reminds me of the Beatles "Rubber Soul" if Stevie Ray Vaughan were sitting in.
You think you've heard good blues?
author: William HaymesYou may think you've heard good blues music, but if you haven't heard Booze Monkey's debut album, you're missing out on one of the most refreshing new albums in the genre. I saw these guys live once and found their sound to be amazing. It's in your face, get down blues. The sound these two guys (just two of them) have is great and the CD captures the live feeling that I got from their show. If you're a fan of the blues, or just good music in general, pick this one up.
Not the Blues your Parents had, but better
author: ScreamerThe amazing guitar work and the intensity of BLUE's growling, dark voice make this CD the top of my pile right now. There is an ambiance of sultry, sweaty bump-and-grind REAL blues here. You hear the anger, the anguish and in some cases, the humor in each chord and each word of this CD. One of the few I've bought lately that I can listen to straight through without skipping tracks. If you like it old-school, with some fresh new ideas thrown in, buy this CD.
Fantastic guitar work, strong solid bass - great listen
author: Lehnanne (LOUP) KiddI have had the pleasure of hearing this band live and this CD does a great job of bringing the powerful energy of this duo to the listeners. Buy three - share them with your friends.
