Boris McCutcheon had been collecting the pieces of his musical mosaic long before he picked up a guitar 15 years ago. He was born in 1969 in Holliston, MA, grew up on farmland, and attended Marlboro College in Vermont. For 9 years, he soaked up the scenery and spirit of New Mexico and Northern California before returning to the east coast sea-sprayed village of Woods Hole, MA. Boris has made his living as an organic farmer and an irrigation designer. He knows hay from straw.
Boris writes songs with organic, gritty beauty, but they're not precious. He doesn't like songs that are precious. Instead, he depicts the natural world, walls built by human hands and emotions, and characters cloaked in sadness with piercing imagery. Boris has a unique knack for noticing sights, sounds, and feelings that are beneath the surface, or askew. His lyrics can take a fantastic turn and more than a few will prompt you to ask, "How did he ever come up with that?"

I was singing along from the beginning.

Just about every song on When We Were Big is fantastic. The lyrics are quirky and unexpected, Boris' voice is truthful and real, and the tunes are catchy. I work at Wyoming Public Radio and gave the CD to the host of our morning music show. He played Meet Me for the listeners of Wyoming Public Radio today. Boris, if you're ever in Laramie, give us a call.

This CD is memorable - you won't have to listen a bunch of times before it sinks in. There's something about it that makes it stick with you and want more. The CD boasts some amazing musicians, but nothing overshadows the sentiments of the songs. Having caught Boris and his band live a couple of times, I thought I knew what I was in for, but the CD is even better than I bargained for!

Quite simply, damn good music, start to finish.

This cd is a most excellent music adventure, continually taking you from one place to another. It has hints of rock, blues, country, and folk, all the while, staying true to an absolutely unique and recognizable originality. This is one of those cd's that just works, start to finish. Everything compliments everything else, making it hard to pinpoint what exactly makes this cd so good. The songs are deep, both musically and lyrically, and I'm still finding tasteful subtleties in the music I hadn't noticed in the first 100 listens. Deep is for keeps, and this one is a keeper. Highly recommended.
