Joe Bouchard - A Brief Biography
Joe Bouchard has been a gigging musician since the age of 10. He performed from a very early age on street corners, backyard parties, and tourist cottages in the 1000 Islands in upstate New York. He hooked up early on with his brother Albert on drums and they had a very successful high school band, called the Regal Tones, in Northern NY. The Bouchard Brothers later became the driving rhythm section and two of the creative forces behind the world famous Columbia artists Blue Oyster Cult.
Joe studied classical piano at Ithaca College from 1966 to 1970 and played guitar and bass in various college bands. After graduating from Ithaca, he moved to Long Island and became a founding member of Blue Oyster Cult. The group became a smashing international success in the late 70s and over the years was awarded nine gold and two platinum awards.
When Joe Bouchard was a music student at Ithaca College in the 1960s, his brother Albert was a struggling musician living with rock group called Soft White Underbelly. During school breaks Joe would take the bus to New York and spend a week or two living with the group in their communal band house. Often there were extended jam sessions that would go until the sun came up.
Two years later in 1970 Joe was invited to become the band's bassist. After only a year of club gigs and demo sessions, they passed an audition for Columbia Records president Clive Davis. Clive signed them on the spot to a seven record contract. They felt poised for the big time, but they decided they needed a new name. After months of intense arguments they threw the naming process into the hands of their manager, Sandy Pearlman. The name, taken from one of Sandy's writings about a fictitious biker gang, was Blue Öyster Cult.
Blue Öyster Cult was not an overnight success. From constant touring they built a growing "cult" following. They opened shows all over the United States for groups such as Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and many more. Their first breakthrough album was the 1975 live set, On Your Feet or On Your Knees, which delighted the intense hard rock fans they had won over the years.
In 1976, BÖC recorded one of their most popular numbers Don’t Fear the Reaper which in now an all-time favorite on classic rock radio. It was used in several movies including the original Halloween, and Stephen King's The Stand. In 1977, they recorded another classic, Godzilla, on their Spectres album for Columbia. In the early days of MTV, the BÖC video, Burnin’ for You, was a staple on the fledgling cable TV show. That song became a big hit also. In 2000 Don’t Fear the Reaper was immortalized on a Saturday Night Live Skit with Will Ferrell and Christopher Walken. The “More Cowbell” skit has become iconic in status rating as one of the top funniest SNL skits of all time, and opened the group music to whole new generations of young fans.
In 1986, Joe decided to retire from Blue Öyster Cult and left the band to pursue other goals. Over the years, Joe was a teacher in a private school, and worked in a music book publishing company. In 1986 he performed as a touring organist and pianist with Spencer Davis of the Spencer Davis Group. In 1998 he released his first self-produced CD for The X Brothers, entitled “Solid Citizens” on Cellsum Records.
He is the author of four educational music books. He also performed in two instructional videos: Rock Bass for Beginners and Bass No Reading Necessary distributed by Alfred Publishing.
In 1998 one of the most popular hard rock group of our time Metallica recorded Joe's song Astronomy on their CD "Garage Inc". This CD was immensely popular and ended up selling over 5 million units. The Metallica CD as of this writing has gone five times platinum!
The Blue Öyster Cult catalog continues to thrive as we enter the 21st century. Many of the early BÖC songs have been repackaged in recent compilations on Sony/Legend records like Workshop of Telescopes and The Best of Blue Öyster Cult. The catalog of original songs recorded by Blue Oyster Cult continues to be very popular and is used in television, movies and most currently the widely popular video games, Guitar Hero and Rockband.
Joe just finished his first solo CD, Jukebox in My Head, which will be released in 2009. For more information see WWW.JOEBOUCHARD.COM.

long live the Cult

This is the first true Joe Bouchard album. The bass player for BOC in their golden era now plays guitar and sings in his first solo album, after many other projects (X Brothers, Blue Coupe, Bouchard Dunaway Smith). It's a very good record with some Boc similarities and a sound between rock and pop. Some excellent material (Dark Boat is my favourite tracks) for a very enjoyable album.

Joe Bocuhard !! JUST GREAT
author: Makis Athens Hellas
JOE BOUCHARD “Jukebox in my head” 2009
Joe is a back with a very good CD.This one is his first solo project titled with his name. His current project is “BLUE COUPE” (with brother Albert) and the X-BROTHERS…after he left B.O.C.(1986) he performed or recorded with the following bands : Cult Brothers (later became “X-Bros”),Spencer Davis,DeadRinger,
Brain Surgeons,BDS (Bouchard Dunnaway Smith) and he also published books and Videos for Guitar,Bass and Keyboard Beginners and was a music teacher at Ithaca College.
While listening this CD for the very first time,a HUGE smile covered my face..it was the feeling of some good old friend “knocking” your door again..reminding you he’s still here.Joe was never gone,he was Always there but this time he’s in our hearts forever. He kust locked the door and threw away the key……………..
1) SHADOWS ON THE STREETS OF N.Y…………………………………………….7,5
The opening song kind reminds me of the X-Bros days I’d say..nice typical XBros riff but not so many changes I’d say…
2) TRAVELLIN’ FREAQ SHOW……………………………………………………………9
The heaviest song of the CD.Initially the riff sounds very simple but VERY heavy sounded..listening to it again and again you discover it has some of the BOC heavy feeling..i love the vocals ..the way Joe sings the lyrics and the vocal-changes..please allow me to say at some points the vocals say to you “it could have been Ozzy singing this one..”..could be wrong but this is my personal feeling while listening to this one..i also love the solo..it somehow passes through Buck’s musical paths……….
3)COWBOY’S DREAM………………………………………………………………………..7
A nice pop song.It kind reminds BOC’s “pissin’ away the summer” (1976) days.
4)JUKEBOX IN MY HEAD……………………………………………………………………7,5
A nice typical bluesy-RnR song..
5)ONE MORE SONG SO LONG……………………………………………………………..7
A pop song in the style of the R.E.M. hits I’d say..
6)WHICH ROAD IS MINE………………………………………………………………….10
One of the two best songs of this CD (along with “Dark Boat”)..a great acoustic blues-country intro..and then a maniac hard rock guitar-riff follows…great hard guitar sound..fast beat..great solo..Joe proves why he is one of the best composers.
7)KICKIN’ A CAN…………………………………………………………………………..7,5
Something different…a country-style song…..
8)HAUNTED DANCE FLOOR………………………………………………………………8,5
Is there any space for a guitar-chill-out song here?Yes,..if it’s a good one..why not?I have to report I love the keyboards’ sound…very mellow…I could swear this song is for someone who just lost someone very importand and he’s trying to think of the future…
9)DARK BOAT………………………………………………………………………………10
The best track of the CD.This one brings back in mind the good old BOC days.It has an “Astronomy” or “SPECTRES” feeling…it could have also been a PINK FLOYD song (“Division Bell” era maybe…)..a very nice sliding solo guitar intro accompanied by mandolin (he also played that instrument for Brain Surgeons’ “a kiss is a promise”)..some of the best lyrics by Joe (“I wanna be by the river when they collect my soul..i wanna be by the river when they collect my soul..”)..some of the best Vocals performance by Joe ever..this song IS A CLASSIC..it’s such a pitty it wasn’t released under the BOC name..it requires more attention.I ‘ve lost counting of how many times I’ve listened (and keep listening..) to this song..the progression is for a classic Rock Hit..when the guitar solo starts..just close your eyes and Joe will travel you to unexplored places..very clever musical additions at the ending of this slow song (the epic drums and the flute-style solo…the careful vocals..add another atmosphere..) .. …you don’t need to know any lyrics..the melodies and the progression will spread the lyrics to your heart…. i just wish this song never ended…………..
10)RUNNING OUT OF TIME……………………………………………………………….7,5
Another “in the style of R.E.M. hits” song(my personal opinion/feeling)…..i love the closing solo..it mind remind the sound of some “Agents of Fortune” pop-rock tunes
11)CAMP SUNSET………………………………………………………………………………8
A very sweet acoustic melody…not a song,just the music..personally one of my favourites tracks..very relaxing…it can make your mood happy and peacefull..only 8 just because it’s a short track,not a song.
12)COMING FOR YOU SOMEDAY……………………………………………………..9
Another different song..while listening to the first chords..i’d expected to listen a WHO style song,,but this very good song changes to a Funky(?) style…good music…nice rhythm..
