Album Notes

The Box Sets (think: embracing the sample) is an ongoing hip hop project based out of Western Massachusetts. Its members vary, but its main conductor is producer/rapper Evan Goodchild. Evan was born in 1981 in Springfield MA and started writing songs in his tweens. He first experimented with hip hop in high school where he and poet Chris Wood started a rap group called “Church and Statement”. They wrote many songs together and, with the aid of fellow musician friend, Anthony Danos, they recorded and mixed a full length in 2003 (“Tight Sweaters”).

Several independent releases and recorded jam sessions later, Evan had quite the unique sound library compiled on his hard drive (from the electric violin mania of Lee Shuer to the many steady sounds of multi-instrumentalist Anthony Danos). The resultant mosaic which was pieced from all of these musician friends’ souls is what makes this Box Sets album special. In addition to sharing instrumentation duties, Evan shares songwriting duties with everyone from a pin pointing poet (Chris Wood) to a rich voiced soul witch (Becca Lucia). Many rappers contribute as well to make this a wildly stimulating ride (J-Son, Ben Jackson, Brandon Douglas, Becca Lucia join in on the rhyming).

As far as the words go, The Box Sets are poets and they don't even know it. Their thoughts on this disc include the following: whispers into the ear of a suicide bomber, warning others that your personality is similar to black coffee, becoming a superhero once you put on your batman pajamas, feeling like a ghastly version of yourself in relation to an ex, and the realities of credit card debt mixed with bad day jobs.

They have played numerous shows throughout the Valley and are ever so pleased to be able to present you with these songs (as well as the killer artwork of Brandon Douglas!). We hope to share them with as many as possible for that is truly the beauty and purpose of music. So yeah, please feel free to contact us any time for any reason, but most of all, thanks for listening!
