Album Notes

In The Revolver Suite, the nine-piece rock-jazz horn band BOZO Allegro takes every song from The Beatles' classic 1966 album, in original order, and plays them in a variety of styles that explore the development of African-influenced American popular music.

The first half of the album is a history of jazz ,from its African roots into spirituals and gospel through ragtime and dixieland and ending with the big bands and bebop.

The second half explores more contemporary styles: soul, funk, reggae, fusion, hip-hop, blues, and r & b.

A MUST-HEAR!

Not such a Bozo

A potted history of jazz as seen through the eyes of the famous Beatles album-and yet more future possibilities as the Rubber Soul and Sgt Pepper albums are obvious contenders. And Abbey Road as it actually used the word "suite" on Side 2. Though I'm not much of a jazz fan the Beatles music has attracted jazzmen in the same way standards did. The Fusion stuff is beyond me and I don't even know what Hip Hop is unless its like Rap.The version of Tomorrow never knows is I suppose an off the wall take on the song. And with something resembling a vocal its out of place really so loses a star. The genre missing is Cool Jazz-or West Coast like the Dave Brubeck Quartet or the Vince Guaraldi Trio. But a great idea

Like Shakespeare's plays, I think the music of the Beatles makes for great re-workings, and this CD is one of the most interesting versions I've seen. I particularly enjoyed the earlier tracks ("Here, There, and Everywhere" as Dixieland was just perfect), but that's more because I'm not an aficionado of later African-derived music than any weakness of the covers. Fun and thought-provoking.
