Album Notes

The songs on this CD are mostly pop and light rock, with some folk and country moods, too.

I’ve long been a songwriter, working in pop and country, a theater composer—and more recently, an author. I co-wrote a #1 country hit, “Saying Hello, Saying I Love You, Saying Goodby,” with Dene Hofheinz Anton and Jeff Barry (writer of “Leader of the Pack” and many other rock classics). and won a Blue Ribbon award for my book of children’s poetry, “Outside The Lines: Poetry At Play” (Penguin, 2002). Also, I scored a lot of off-Broadway shows, and was the pianist, lead vocalist, and occasional conductor of the 5th longest-running Broadway show ever (“Oh! Calcutta!”).

To get an idea of what the songs are like, you can see a few lyrics from each:

1 “About 7 Lovers”

Takes about 7 lovers to keep you satisfied:
One to rock you like a baby; one to kiss you like a bride;
One to argue politics; one to play catch in the park;
One to help out in the kitchen; one to hold tight in the dark;
And then of course there's one more,
Just to make sure
All the other boys stay in line . . .

2 “I give up (Gonna have to love you)”

Never thought it would come to this—-
That you could win a revolution with a single kiss . . .

3 “October”

Flannel shirts, pumpkin pies,
Harvest moon on the rise,
Rain-washed steel-grey skies—-
October!

4 “Rosemarie”

She taught me a new old song every Sunday,
Round by the fountain, down Washington Square;
She said this’ll all come in handy someday;
I didn’t believe her, til she wasn’t there . . .

5 “If it ain’t broke”

You may think she’s all through with him;
Your heart and her heart have found a true rhythm . . .
You turn around, she’s gone to give him
That famous One Last Chance . . .
Oh yes, her heart may have her cryin’
But if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,
You can break your own heart, tryin’ . . .

6 "You Say"

You want to see what’s out beyond the horizon,
But while the sun is risin’
Don’t forget—
It’s gonna set,
Each day.

7 “Once, Near Omaha”

We were traveling in an old blue Ford station wagon
And we thought the world was ours;
And the miles passed underneath our wheels
And we saw the moon rise, above the corn fields . . .

8 “Samoa (Let me take you to . . . )”

We will buy a little home
With a roof of palm
And walls of twisting vine;
We will say very little.
We will stay very calm,
With your dreams right next to mine.

9 “Buy Me a Dog”

I try to see you as my sunshine;
Sometimes you feel more like my fog . . .
Think I’m gonna buy me a dog.

10 “Still Life”

He’s standing at the window, as though he’s above it all.
She’s lying on the bed, with her face to the wall.
She just asked a question;
She said,“Answer from your heart.”
He’s got to draw a picture now,
And he don’t know where to start.

11 “No One in L.A. Knows What to Do (when it’s raining)"

No one here wants to help me spend this sweet rainy day.
Even got me complainin’, saying “Rain, go away,”—-
But maybe I’m the one who should not stay . . . .
‘Cause no one in L.A. knows what to do,
And what am I doing here, without you?

12 “At the Marina Del Rey”

At the Marina Del Rey,
Where all the flying girls float ‘round,
That’s where he met his angel out of uniform,
Right after she touched down.
At the Marina Del Rey, he fell into her sky-blue eyes,
She didn’t need one word to say,
She just looked his way;
The boy was hypnotize’.

[Note: The Marina Del Rey is an area of L.A. where, years ago, flight attendants—-then mostly women, and called “stewardesses”—-lived, and hung out between flights. I believe that's no longer the case.]

13 "A Little Longer (With My Friends)"

Why does the perfect time of day
Have to come when the daytime ends?
And all I want to do is stay
A little longer with my friends.

14 “If I were the moon”

If I were the moon, I’d be more than fair.
I’d work even harder than that old man up there . . .
I’d call loved ones to lovers;
I would use what I have learned.
If I were the moon,
I’d leave no stone heart unturned.

Personal note: Brad and his wife (a day care teacher and aide) live near Morristown, NJ. They have two daughters, who have always enjoyed hearing and learning his songs,* and who got to play outside fairly often, too.

About 7 Lovers
author: Patricia Hawkins
Wonderful lyrics, melodies. Soulful singers-- and Norah Jones-- take note! The artful simplicity and the feeling and the melodies are rare. I especially love the songs "Still Life," "Once Near Omaha," "A Little Longer," "If I were the Moon," "Samoa," and "October." All of these are my favorite song.They are fresh but have a timeless quality--like standards for today. All of these should be covered, covered, covered!For now, we can listen and enjoy.

I thought no one made music -- melodic, touching, lush, evocative, intelligent -- like this any more. Why hasn't everyone heard of Brad Burg?

This is a GREAT CD! I got it after buying a copy of Brad Burg's book, Outside the Lines: Poetry at Play, which impressed me so much that I Googled "Brad Burg" and discovered he also had a CD. The lyrics are pure poetry, and the melodies magic. I find myself quoting lines from it all the time.
