Album Notes

Karma Bed, the debut solo record by Brad Rice, comes after years of contributing his guitar work to such artists as The Accelerators, Finger, The Backsliders, Whiskeytown, Ryan Adams, Tift Merritt, and Jay Farrar's newly revamped Son Volt. Karma Bed may take some listeners of the previously mentioned artists by surprise with its bluesy and heavy psychedelic overtones, guitars galore, and reverb-drenched vocals, but the sound and songs (two co-written with Steve Wynn, formerly of The Dream Syndicate) are a true reflection of Rice's reckless passion for the spirited and soulful noise that has always resided in his mind and soul.

I liked the album and my favourite track is Testify, it's one of those albums where the songs grows on you.

New guitar angles

I thought the album was good and refreshingly different. while hard to define I thought it was worth keeping in the player and it does grow on you. The mix had a bit more reverb than I would have put in but the beauty of art is you get to do what you want.

Having seen Brad play with the Backsliders for a few years, and hearing his efforts with Ryan Adams Tift Merrit and Son Volts latest I've always been impressed with his playing. One of the finer axemen out there today. This album lets him stretch beyond the Americana/Country label and he rocks out a lot more. Worth the listen and it grows on you with repeated playings.

"more than" a guitarist?
author: Phillip Reid
A good indicator of whether you spent your money wisely on an album is whether it grows on you the more you play it. This record works. It's not about a single or two, and it's also not about fret-wanking by any means. There are real songs on here, and some trippy grooves, and an always-interesting variety of stuff in the mix, and it was put together thoughtfully. Brad's got a lot going for him, and he gives us a broad taste of it here.
