Album Notes

Sohcahtoa, the May 2004 release, has been spinning on college and specialty commercial radio across the country. It charted on CMJ's Top 200, and continues in heavy rotation on XM and elsewhere. The album, written and recorded by Willem Hartong - aka Tong - with a varied supporting cast and crew of musicians, was the impetus for the creation of what is now the solid three-piece touring band, Breaking Laces. The sound is smart indie rock, based in songwriting that's unique and real. From love songs to rock anthems to imaginary trips to outer space, the songs are inspiring and well-crafted, and at the same time, accessible and catchy.

Tong fronts the band with a heart-on-his-sleeve singer/songwriter meets guitar-smashing-but-good-guy rocker vibe. Seth, on drums, was trained in jazz, has become adept at mixing sampling into live shows, and is "in the zone" like no other. And Rob, the tall, sexy Polish bassist and backing vocalist who just plain loves to play and play well, provides the necessary tie between the two.

Breaking Laces sound has been compared to bands across the spectrum - Violent Femmes, Lemonheads, Ben Folds Five, Elvis Costello, Counting Crows, Weezer and everything in between. Comparisons, however, don't quite do justice. Simply put, what's so different about this band is that they are the real deal. From the songwriting to the vocals to the explosive and quirky live show, it's no wonder people have really started to take notice of this band from Brooklyn.

Their new album, Lemonade, set for release on CDBaby in early August, represents a sonic leap forward from the critically acclaimed Sohcahtoa. An important step in the evolution of the Laces, Lemonade proves that their frequent touring around the country has brought their unique vision into focus: rock-solid songwriting with a powerful and energetic sound, which have brought them legions of fans throughout the country.
