Album Notes

Reclusive drum'n'bass/downtempo artist & producer breath hails from Columbus, Ohio and has been running sounds underground for some time. His music is a rich mix between d'n'b's characteristic speed and sweeping ideas and sounds that smooth out the edges so that the music can move the feet as well as the mind a bit, telling stories along the way with a heavy sense of jazz and natural instrumentation (pianos, rhodes, drum sets).

Excerpts from an interview:

About character:
"I got tired of hearing so much of what is otherwise a great musical form wallow in its own pretensions. Where was the fun? Why does every song out now drone on for a minute exactly before a beat comes in when it's not even a dance record? I wanted to get back to the roots and self-awareness of it and bring some character and stories back to it. When you listen to one of my songs I want you to know that I did it and find yourself in it."

About space:
"I wanted to create music you could be affected by. With instrumental music, this can be really easy, since most of the effect that music has on people starts with tone. I can play you the types of rhythms that you enjoy dancing to in a club with African instruments and it'll do nothing for you without good tone. So I wanted to create a middle tone that ran through the songs that sort of tranced you out once you got past the banging; a tone that bounced between the space in your ears a bit. That's where the storytelling lies."

Very strong roots of d'n'b

You can hear the samples...breath is on some other stuff. This CD really does go back to the roots of what d'n'b was about: hard, fast fun. No overlong intros, just slammin' beats and wicked soundscapes. And the spots where he isn't even fast? He's still got the edge. For fans of Source DIrect or ambient or Goldie.
