Album Notes

Brian Buta began playing guitar at the age of 13, and started writing songs after learning a few chords. In high school and college, Brian played in numerous punk and rock bands, and recorded band and solo tracks using multi-track tape machines. In 2005, Brian founded the Baltimore indie rock band FFHH and began exploring digital recording. The release of his first full-length solo album, False Colors, is the culmination of years of trial, error and ultimately success with music and recording. He continues to hone his skill as a guitarist, a performer, a songwriter, and an amateur recording engineer.

Brian’s musical interests and ideas have followed many paths over the past decade. Though he started out playing simple acoustic songs, his musical output has spanned many styles, from punk to rock to electronic pop, to many points in between and beyond. Brian aims to make songs that are both engaging as well as unexpected; to pull the listener in with something strange yet familiar. As Music Monthly wrote about his 2003 EP, Ineffigy, “His music may loosely fall into the category of modern rock, but there is a dark industrial underbelly to Buta's songs that makes them different.”

With the False Colors album, Brian brings cohesion and power to a set of admittedly style-varied songs. The thumping opening of Caloris Basin propels you into the album, while title track, False Colors, swirls around your head with ambient noise and an almost tribal beat. The ominous synthesizer of Black Ring floats seamlessly into the straight-ahead indie pop of Screens. And the closing song of the album, Motion Action, pulls all of the elements together, with its driving bass and drums, pulsing guitar, and a soaring vocal melody that carries you right back to the start.

False Colors is an original mix of rock, electronic and pop music. The album combines the sounds of light and dark, the expected and the surprising, into an engaging listening experience.
