“The Voce Project” is the latest release by independent Phoenix, based artist, Brian Chartrand. This album effortlessly careens between folk (“Barrelman”), rock (“Traveling Music”), funk (“Going To See My Baby”), soul (“Change of Tune”), alternative country (“Shelter”), and genres in between while still maintaining a common thread: Brian’s soul infused vocals and hooky acoustic guitar rhythms. In order to gracefully float between such distinct genres, you need musicians of the highest calibur. “The Voce Project,” the name pays homage to the jazz club where these musicians met (Voce Lounge-Scottsdale, AZ) is a who’s who in the Arizona music scene with each player possesing credentials for days. Brian Chartrand has been performing in the the greater Phoenix area since his move from Massachusetts in late 2003. Coming on his 8th year anniversary in the Valley of the Sun, Chartrand has released 9 independant albums with his various bands and solo endeavors. “The Voce Project” however is by far his most bold and diverse musical offering to date.
By today’s standards, this is a live album; the core 5-piece band met in the studio for an afternoon and recorded all 10 tunes, live. There was no click track, no “phoned-in” parts; just 5 musicians with a goal to make an organic, authentic, grooving record. From the first note of “Traveling Music” to the last note of “The Long Way Home,” you can hear the music breath; each track growing and unfolding before your ears.
