The moral is a collection of 6 original jazz tunes written and arranged by myself, Brian Schindele (pronounced Shin-dell). I have lived in San Francisco for years, and
have played with a number of bands in various styles. This CD is straight ahead acoustic jazz, and all instrumental, save for the last tune.
I started working on this CD (writing and arranging) in the summer/fall of 2004. These plans were put on hold when I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, so I was in the hospital and shuffling around my apartment rather than in the studio. Not fun, but it could have been much worse, and knock on wood, things are cool for now.
So fast forward to last fall, when I finally got it back on track. I wanted to work with musicians I have known and admired for a long time. I have played with Tim Vaughan on a number of projects, and consider him one of the finest drummers around today. Sheldon Brown is a wonderful sax player, equally at home in straight ahead and avant settings. Dave Scott on trumpet, cornet and flugelhorn has a marvelous lyrical style which I knew would blend terrifically with Sheldon's tenor. Kurt Ribak is a solid and musical bass player and a fine composer in his
own right.
We recorded the tunes live on 12/13/05 except the vocal tune "Everybody's Jealous" for which we recorded the quintet live on the 13th (with Sheldon on lead alto) and overdubbed the remaining horns and Connie Champagne's vocals on the following day.
So what's the moral? In a story, it's the lesson learned at the end; Aesop spelled them out quite clearly. In life, we don't have this luxury, but as we get closer to the end than the beginning, we start to pick up hints about what it
means to be a human and how we should live out the rest of our lives.
