Starting his singing career as a member of the church choir at the age of eight, Doc quickly learned to appreciate every genre of music.
Originally inspired by such singers as Ray Charles, Jackie Wilson, James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Elvis, The Beatles, The Everly Bros., Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Buck Owens and PJ Proby.
His vocal skills allow him to perform songs from Bakersfield country to Gershwin swing melodies to Sam and Dave soul ballads to Delbert Mcclinton type rock and roll, all delivered with Doc's extensive range, power, and unique phrasing.
Over the years Doc Reed's guitar style has encompassed every category from jazz, and hillbilly to classic R&B and stomping Rock & Roll. Influenced chiefly by legends (and DC area residents) Danny Gatton and Roy Buchanan, Doc became obsessed with improvisation. Both saxophonist Charlie Parker and trumpeter Miles Davis thoroughly saturated his personal style. Doc's guitar picking has become a distinctive trademark, with a spectrum from hard driving to melodic, from "chicken pickin" to burnin' blues to bebop.
Doc was an early graduate of The Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery in Phoenix AZ.
Washington D.C. Rockabilly legend Billy Hancock, Jon Carroll, Dave Chappell, Tom Principato, and of course the late, great Danny Gatton are but a few of the notable musicians Doc has shared the stage with during his years in the trenches. He has also had the pleasure of playing with the dynamic rhythm section from Swingspeak consisting of Steve Wolf on bass and Barry Hart on drums. He has appeared at the Kennedy Center and is a veteran of the house bands at such local area venues as the Surf Club(with Chick & Chris Hall) and Hunter's Lodge(with Roy Justice). Doc regularly played piano with Whop Frazier on a weekly Monday night radio broadcast live from Tornado Alley.
Best of all, Doc is a talented songwriter. His latest effort, "A Downhome Circus", contains various styles of music including foot-stompimg rockers, soulful ballads and gospel tinged rock. His lyrics are insightful, poignant and humorous.

This disc is full of great songs with an old school Mowtown - Stax vibe meets a new school sensability. Top notch guitar playing to boot. Highly reccommended!!!!

Must have this disc

A great CD! My favorite song is "Get Your Attention" for its subtle humour. The album overall is upbeat soul with excellent guitar work in the redneck jazz vein. But there is so much more, its hard to classify this album except to say it is Doc's heady stew made from the past 50 years of American music of all genres.
If you live in the DC area, you have to see the Doc Reed Band play live. High energy shows with a relaxed band of journeymen musicians play Doc's compositions and a broad variety of songs from other artists. Soul, rock, country, and blues will all make there appearances as the night progresses. One night I even heard an AC/DC song! A tight rythm section is enhanced by Doc on guitar and Mike Kelly on keyboard. The vocals are great with most members of the band taking a turn at lead vocal and most songs having accompanying vocal harmonies. I leave a Doc Reed Band show rejuvenated and happy.

A DownHome Circus
author: june stanley
This is a fine example of roots music showcasing a strong set of original songs and music.
Doc Reed manages to mix blues, country, soul, and rock'n'roll all into one album. His solos range from sizzling fast and edgy to hauntingly soulful. From the hard driving foot stomping rocky "Trying to Get Your Attention" to the mystically romantic "Night Beside the River", Doc Reed displays a uniquely diversified expertise in both rhythm and lead guitar. The arrangments are amazingly complex and yet refreshingly honest in their down home presentation. From riviting fingerpicking riffs to sultry blues solos each song has it's own unique sound. This is an album well worth adding to your collection.
