Brother Ray serves up energetic piano-based pop with a dark sense of humor. These songs have lyrics that get under your skin and tunes that won't get out of your head.
Brother Ray hails from Yale University and draws on influences as diverse as Radiohead, Ben Folds Five, The Talking Heads, No Doubt, Randy Newman, and The Monkees.
"Movie" is a concept album. It's about living in an age where love is fame and movies are realer than real life. The album travels through a variety of musical styles-- from the upbeat ska of "Romeo" to the introspective drive of "Movie" to the textured harmonies of "The Death of Black and White" to the bubblegummy pop of "Unspoken."
It's unlike anything you've ever heard-- like a rock musical, a carnival, and a drug trip combined. Kitschy, edgy, smart, funny and definitely worth a listen.

I love these songs. Witty, tuneful, surprising, fun.
author: Brian Mullin
The catchy tunes on this CD really get into your head. It's like the soundtrack to an incredibly hip, slightly subversive tenn romantic comedy. I love the highly original instrumentation. "Romeo" ranks with the best upbeat pop songs -- it will get you into a great mood. "Unspoken" and "Long Winter" combine accessible, entertaining music with scintillating, cynical lyrics. Of the darker tunes I like "Tin Man" and "The Death of Childhood". The former is an obsessively martial and apocalyptic, the latter nostalgic and haunting. Finally something that is witty, tuneful, surprising and very, very fun.

postmodern tongue-in-cheekiness, with love
author: Dj Qt
as pop music goes, you can't find a smarter album. deceptively simple, this
cd spins classic silver screen story lines of love and loss with a hip and
ironic new sound. but most impressive of all is the real musical ingenuity
driving this concept album, covering styles from ambient to salsa.
brother ray's "movie" gives you a little of everything, and in the meantime,
delivers biting insight into our celebrity culture. an ambitious labor of
love, this album makes you ask for seconds.
