TONI BROWN and Ed Munson – State Of Mind
Referred to by fans as “Patsy Cline on acid” and the “psychedelic Sheryl Crow,” Toni Brown has spent the past fifteen years weaving an ethereal musical tapestry. The Toni Brown Band toured for over a decade, and she shared the stage with the Grateful Dead’s Tom Constanten, Vince Welnich and Donna Jean, performed with Leftover Salmon’s Vince Hermann, used her band to back up Merl Saunders and Vassar Clements, and played with everyone from Phish to Blues Traveler, members of Hot Tuna, the New Riders of the Purple Sage, Flying Burrito Brothers, John Cipollina, and dozens of other notables from the classic, jam, psychedelic, folk and country rock genres.
Toni Brown provided a valid niche for the Grateful Dead during her twenty-plus years as publisher of Relix Magazine--a Deadhead bible and birthplace of the Jamband music scene. From 1979-2001, she supported hundreds of up-and-coming bands, providing the most direct marketplace for musicians to reach their fans.
In 1995, Toni released her debut CD, Blue Morning, featuring the David Nelson Band and members of Hot Tuna, including Jorma Kaukonen. Her second release, Dare To Dream, featured the Toni Brown Band with Vassar Clements and Flying Burrito Brother John Beland. Her third CD was a stripped down singer/songwriter affair with bluegrass flourishes.
State Of Mind is a celebration of music between Toni and songwriter/guitarist Ed Munson. The pair tackle a variety of topics with wit and reverence.
Toni and Ed have been performing together since 2005. They just completed RELIX: The Book –The Grateful Dead Experience, a 256-page, full color historical document compiled by Toni and laid out by Ed. It will be released October, 2009 on BackBeat Books.
