Elements of rock, classical, blues, funk, reggae and world music informed the quartet's approach to contemporary jazz, adding considerable color and texture to the arangements. The rhythmic impetus, meanwhile, ranged from light, brush-stroked swing to tumultuous waves of syncopated beats. Of course, since one seldom gets to hear a jazz combo that favors a lyrical trombone and a blues-inflected Hammond organ, much of the music seemed to benefit from an intrinsic freshness.
