Album Notes

"San Diego is a pleasant spot..no earthquakes, nice weather, and it's also the home of trumpet player Bruce Cameron. He's been around, done a few things, and paid his dues. His band went on to become Fattburger, from which some great talent has surfaced in the solo career arena. Here is Bruce's stab in that direction via "A Blue Cornet". It seems that he is known for ripping up the clubs with his fiery, Latin style playing. None of that can be heard here. What he offers us is the flip side: ballads played quietly and introspectively. This is a classy disc that doesn't have a bad cut on it. Cameron has got the chops, to be sure and his material is right on the money.." Jonathan Berg L.A. Jazz Scene Magazine

"The latest release out of the chute from Cexton is a disc by a wonderful and talented cornet player by the name of Bruce Cameron. His new CD, called "A Blue Cornet" is a marvelous recreation of some of the most beautiful jazz ballads ever written. Bruce's sensitivity comes through on each cut as he makes his instrument cry, sigh, smile, and weep softly." John Anello Jr. Las Vegas Spotlight Magazine

Bruce first heard the magic of jazz while he was attending Bucknell University, learning the wonders of Donald Byrd, Freddie Hubbard, Miles Davis and Lee Morgan. Utilizing a technique distilled from years of legitimate training, the trumpeter began his investigation of jazz in earnest and was soon leading his own band. Cameron won awards at many collegiate jazz festivals. He went to the University of Hawaii in Honolulu for graduate studies in psychology, and there worked behind traveling artists such as Anita O'Day and Nancy Wilson.

After a stint as a soloist with the U.S.Navy Show Band, Bruce settled in San Diego in the early 70's and was in short time a major factor in the city's jazz scene. He was instrumental in launching the concert jazz series at the Catamaran Hotel and Humphery's. In 1981 he teamed with Hollis Gentry to form the band that eventually became known as Fattburger.
After touring with the group and free-lancing with many local bands, Bruce began performing with several San Diego Latin bands including Los Travelers.

This experience led him to form the current Latin Jazz All Stars group featuring percussionist Carlos Vazquez. Between this often-performing Latin group, the Bruce Cameron Ensemble, the Jazz Project Big Band and the Big Band Express, Bruce has a rich musical life.

Body and Soul is heartbreakingly beautiful. I play this album late at night, on long drives across the desert.

My wife and I first heard this CD at Cafe Bella in San Diego (one of the most authentic italian restaurants in the city), and we thought maybe it was Wynton Marsalis- we were shocked to find out it was an independent release from a local San Diego musician. Bruce's trumpet play is world class caliber and his treatments of these songs are inspired.
