This improvisation is a sonic inquiry. The objective was to observe where melody and sonic texture meet. The two musicians were limited in their musical choices. The trumpet played only sustains followed by occasional rests. The synthesizer had similar directions, but could use chords and timber shifts. The result is a tapestry of sound, enhanced by the warm tone of both instrumentalists.
While I'm very pleased with the three recorded versions of this musical experiment, i should comment on my "findings". I did not see any particular place or region where melody and sound merge. Rather, I surprisingly concluded that distinctions, between those two, are not concrete but relative to the perspectives of the listener.
I am most grateful that composer Christian Wolff, a musical influence of mine, wrote his own musical observations to this project. These are included on the CD jacket.
Prior recordings of mine include O.P.T.I.O.N.S., a series of improvisations for electro acoustic ensemble. The basis for this project has been mentioned in the book on graphic notation entitled "Notations21". Additionally, I recorded another duo, with guitarist Scott Fraser, entitled "Landscape With Figure". For information about any of these projects, please contact me at the websites listed on my CDBaby page.
