Album Notes

Bruce Huss
Guitarist-Singer/Songwriter

The first thing people say when they hear Bruce's music is: "Boy, can that guy play guitar." His two CDs are filled to the brim with meaty instrumentals and clever, feel-good and heart tugging songs, wrapped in his fresh, Kansas perspective. When his song Acoustical Romance won a songwriting award at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, it just seemed appropriate. You see, Bruce Huss is in love with guitars and songwriting.

His live shows are hard to categorize. He comfortably slides from folk to pop-rock, from blues to new-age, and from a classical sounding piece, to “almost country” and back again.

His first CD, View From the Top, and now his new CD, Patience, are all original and all impressive, especially for anyone who appreciates a good guitarist.

Patience:
“Acoustic guitar master Bruce Huss returns…” “…stunning, imaginative and unique” “Got New Shoes hoots and hollers with speed and flare” “Joscelyn’s Wedding glides across the air with graceful accuracy and emotional intelligence.”
- Wichita City Paper

“When you listen to this CD, be ready to smile, tap your foot, and start thinking about how much music means to you.” “Absolutely stunning. Sitting Ovation is probably my favorite track on the CD. I didn’t want this song to end.”
“…I knew he was good, but man, I wasn’t prepared for what my ears heard.”
-KS Acoustic Arts Assoc.

View From the Top:
“Talents such as Bruce Huss don't just fall from walnut trees…”
“...the instrumental compositions here couldn't shine brighter or seep deeper into your soul –in fact Mahogany and Scruffbucket will leave you as breathless on the fifteenth listen as on the first.” - F5 Magazine

“With cover art taken from a Colorado Mt. Top, he must have picked up some lightning in his fingers on the way up.” – KS Acoustic Arts Assoc.

His name will sound familiar to the locals. That’s because he worked 13 years as an award winning news reporter/photographer at Wichita’s KSNW TV, where he crafted over a thousand feature stories in a special segment called “Huss & Company.”

“I think writing a good news story is much like writing a good song, except the news had to be factual, and I can lie as much as I want to in a song,” joked Bruce.

You’ll hear a good number of guitar instrumentals in his shows, and while many are original, he’ll also throw in pieces by Tommy Emmanuel, Pat Kirtley, Stephen Bennett, Chet Atkins and Martin Taylor…sacred names in the acoustic guitar world. You won’t see many performers who dare to tread in those waters.

Dare to attend a performance by Bruce Huss, and you’ll get smacked in the face with a variety of styles…and a good time.

If you like clean picking and good words with songs, this is the CD for you. I like listening to this CD anytime because of the beat and variety of his songs. Having played with Bruce many times at different places, I can tell you he puts his heart and soul into every song he writes. He brings the best out of his Steve Patience Grand Concert walnut and sitka spruce top guitar. I like how he tunes down 1/2 step to really open up his guitar sound. Bruce uses different tunings to change the mood of his songs and makes them so nice to listen to. Thanks Bruce for this CD and please keep on pumping out your good MUZE. Vince

I was recently rewarded with a copy of Bruce Huss’s new CD, entitled “Patience”. I’ve heard Bruce several times in the Singer/Songwriter Circle at the ‘Choke, so I knew he was good, but man, I wasn’t prepared for what my ears heard. Let me begin by saying, “When you listen to this CD, be ready to smile, tap your foot, and start thinking about how much music means to you”. When I put “Patience” in to the CD player, I listened to it all the way through twice. Usually, with a new CD, I listen to a song, then fast forward to another, all the way through to the end, then I start over and listen to the songs that grab my short attention span the most. The opening track, Patience, is a strong starter. Bruce’s use of melodic harmonies throughout the entire CD, are strong, stable and interesting. Patience is one of my favorite songs. I also think track #9, Sitting Ovation, is remarkably well written and performed. The beautiful notes that float gracefully through the air start immediately, and continue to take you on a journey of the mind that is sweet, and almost aching at times. When I hear music that makes me shake my head just a little, man, you know you’ve got something. Absolutely stunning. Sitting Ovation is probably my favorite track on the CD. I didn’t want this song to end. Thinking back, I don’t really remember a weak track on the entire CD. Bruce’s songs are not simply played as chord progressions, but with a lot of “Bruce Style”. That’s to say, there’s a lot of fluid finger-picking and changes that keep you interested. One other thing I liked about the new CD, is I noticed that it ended just as strong as it started. You know how sometimes you buy a CD, and the only good songs are the first four or five? Not here, boy. You’ll get your money’s worth when you buy Bruce’s new CD, “Patience”. There’s even some slide work on a couple of songs. Most of the songs are gorgeous instrumentals, but several have vocals. So, if you’re a fan of great acoustic music, you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of Bruce’s new CD.
