Album Notes

Brian Thomas is a folk singer-songwriter from British Columbia, Canada. His musical influences are diverse, which has given him a unique sound that is hard to categorize, yet appeals to people with very different tastes in music. Brian blends together finger-style guitar, Celtic and classical instruments, peaceful melodies, baroque counterpoint, and passionate vocals, to create a refreshingly original sound.

Across cultures and generations, music has been a vehicle for storytelling, and Brian's songs have sought to re-capture that tradition. His debut release, Storybook, is a personal, expression of the deep emotions he experienced as he traveled the difficult road of losing a loved one. An intensely vulnerable and starkly human CD about love, the pain of loss, and moving on, Storybook has reduced many of its listeners to tears. Brian says, "I was pouring my heart out. When I was writing the songs and recording them, I was experiencing everything that I was singing about. Somehow people's hearts can hear those emotions when they listen to the music." Reviews of Storybook have been overwhelmingly positive. Cam Bastedo of www.godsofmusic.com wrote this regarding one of Storybook's songs, The Forsaken Merman: "Without meaning to be fulsome I have simply never encountered a more beautiful folk song. The song is tasteful, textured and even heart-rending. ... You will seldom spend time more prudently, than in giving this beautiful piece an audience. The more often I listen, the more enchanted I become." Other fans have said, "The songs are so amazingly beautiful," "Enchanting... incredible artistry and sheer beauty," and "Incredibly inspiring, so unique, it's amazing."

I seldom came across an album which keep drawing my attention as Storybook did. I felt way back in time: a castle hall, a big fire, a lot of food and than this man, this bard. From the four albums I recently bought at CDBaby this one is played nearly every day. What a warm voice, excellent lyrics and peaceful music. I'm anxious to know more about this singer/songwriter

"Paints Pictures & Mindscapes - The Listener Becomes Another Part"
author: Duane Riebling

Storybook by Brian Thomas is one of those CD's you have to share with your closest friends. It's the kind of disc you listen to from beginning to end. The tones are warm & distinct while the musical texture is rich - instruments blending, meshing & weaving within & throughout & out of each other. Very refreshing in contrast to the so much overtly electronic & contrived music around that seems to have lost its soul. The words cue from the passion of the melodies & you as a listener have to share in the experience, from elation to sorrow & beyond. This is the record's greatest strength - it will make you feel something. The definition of musical excellence to me is being moved by what you've heard. Brian Thomas has reminded me with 'Storybook' that it's better to live than to exist, that dreams are part of being, that it's never uncool to reveal who you really are. How did I get all of that out of this compact disc ? Find out in three simple steps ! One, buy Storybook : two, turn off the phone : three, just listen ...

Medieval bard visits the 21st century
author: Geneviève MacNeil

Take a journey to a place of enrapturing music and heroic tales. Listen to it again and again, soaring in its blend of voices, catching new harmonies and appreciating its layers. Storybook is a CD unlike any I’ve heard. I am fascinated by the lives of the characters: torn by their tragedies, moved by their longings, delighted to tears by their hopes and their expectant trust. For all those who’ve ever wished for a knight in shining armour or for a lady’s favour. For all who know what it is to wait for a dream...and for those whose dreams have faded into the past. With soul-stirring music and inspiring lyrics, Brian Thomas brings us to a magical place where mermen sing their loneliness, where a lover waits unceasingly for his beloved, and where the music of love can bring back the dead. One can imagine Brian Thomas as a travelling bard, back in medieval times, weaving his tales with song in the court of the king. There is a vulnerability here, revealed in the recurring theme of loneliness, that hints at a personal understanding of such loss. But even the heartache is overwhelmed by sturdy hope - we know this is not the end of the story. And so a collection of sad songs is, in the end, uplifting. I can’t wait for more.
