beats the hell out of me (bthoom) was formed in late 1988. Spawned from the mentorship of Grant Wolf's Jazz Program at MCC, Tom Coffeen (g), Aaron Stewart (b), Chris Bailey (g) and Erik Rogan (d) merged to form the rhythm section of group that defied definition, and was considered by many (us) to be light years forward of a musical category. A combination of different musical backgrounds graciously complimented and explored musical boundaries. Early musical influences included acts as: Weather Report, Bad Brains, Mahavishnu Orchestra, The Fixx, King Crimson, Band of Gypsy's, Keith Jarret, Slayer, Talk Talk, Miles Davis (electric) and the Police.
Mike Pistrui (v) was also discovered at MCC - hanging "vocalist seeking band" flyers in the music building. Mike WAS a vocalist that had to be "seen" to be "heard". A super-human antenna hyper-sensitive to his tonal ecosystem, Pistrui would lose himself in music like a method actor gone freak. Early recordings could only capture one dimension of Mike; his idiom was the stage. Pistrui, the epitome of a music lover, would give his heart, soul, blood, sweat and tears at every performance. Mike's delivery was brutally honest and explored the parameters of emotional expression. Many fans saw this as a refreshing alternative to the image based, lifeless vocalist of the day.

beats the hell out of me completed two albums for Metal Blade, the second of which, Rolling Thunder Music was produced by Ross Robinson. Thanks to Brad Singer, who supplied the deficit funds required to construct this endeavor, Beats got a once in a lifetime chance to record with a top producer at a top recording studio; Richard Kaplan's Indigo Ranch Studio.
BTHOOM has returned.

still high and mighty
author: dearnsfriend and former member of cheese and slop house which mark rogan sang for. he introduced my to his brothers band and year after year. they still blow my mind.
Unbelievable
author: Joe, Luebeck, GermanyMy musical comeback of the year! BTHOOM are back with their incomparable style! Still a mixture of hardcore/rock with now a touch of EMO, but even the "calmer" songs are so great. And the voice of singer Mike Pistrui has not lost any of his dynamic, variation, so good to hear in a music-world of same "cries", "poppers" etc. Thank you for this record!!!!!

author: LynnI started playing the CD in my project team room and everyone loves it! They find it very energizing to listen to. It's definitely one of the favorite CDs that get selected. We all like the range of songs. One of my coworkers commented on the how well the overall arrangement of the music was. Several people want me to get copies of the CD for them. One person borrowed it for their weekend party.

author: Gheryroots... hard to find. but, in my musical development, bthoom was a strong influence. fast foward, and here it is the newest release of a still-great band. finally, a record that caters to those that thrive on groove and intesity. trust me, folks... i make records for a living, and i haven't listened to those that i've worked on as much as i have this record. i wish cds had LP grooves... so that i could wear it out, and HAVE TO BUY IT AGAIN!!!

author: ElizabethThis disk has not left my player. I especially like to listen to it when driving at night. The songs range from catchy, scary, sad, happy to powerful. My favorite song is Criminal investigation.

author: BrettThe CD met expectations and more! All the songs exhibit the same BTHOOM style we've missed for so long PLUS the CD overall demonstrates the evolution of the band's talent. It is so refreshing and unique from other music styles. I love "Questions and Answers"! It's my favorite!

Lyrically strong and varied, the music is razor-like in its visceral ability to pierce the listener's psyche. The production is on par with the best in the business. "Revising History" is a tantalizing approach to a mystery that only moves further away the closer you get to it. Extremely recommended.
