Musically and lyrically the CD doesn't really fit a genre - Folk, Americana, singer songwriter - except all of the songs are provocative and interesting. From the hard edges of "There's No Just War" to the melancholic "Panic Attack," to the Spanish flavored "Must be the Ramblas Blues" or the evocative "Go with the Flow" the listener is drawn into these Jouneys to the edges of the world. The lyrics are finely honed and Grammy nominated and vertern musician Ric Hordinsk and a dozen studio musicians and performers help weave the music to evoke a range of moods. There are songs that are straight acoustic guitar pieces, a rock fiddle anthem, songs with string sections or cello or cuatro or mandolin or delta slide guitar. The themes range from political songs such as "There's No Just War," to the tribal rhythms of "Without Sanctuary" (about an exhibit of the same name about lynchings of black people in the South) to softer reflections on life like "Go with the Flow" or "The Road to El Dorado." Every song evokes a different sense and experience. The booklet with lyrics is recommended.

Intriquing Progressive Folk Music
author: Diane and the RadioIndy.com Reviewer Team
James Buchanan releases his newest Progressive Folk CD, “Packing for Telluride (and other journeys to the edges of the world)” which is overflowing with a collection of works that proves to be quite rootsy, melodic, and reflective. Buchanan takes his song writing talents and spurs an insightful look into a variety of topics ranging from politics to love. His voice is not only strong and sincere but makes you want to listen to the stories he so eloquently weaves. With a march like rhythm, “There’s No Just War,” offers stunning lyrics that drives Buchanan’s message to the heart. Another song, “Panic Attack,” is somber in tonality as the acoustic guitar strums mellow progressions while the cello injects solemn riffs. Splashes of Spanish flair surround the intriguing song, “Must be the Ramblas Blues.” Check out James Buchanan and his stimulating album, “Packing for Telluride (and other journeys to the edges of the world)” especially if you like Folk music with perceptive lyrics.
