Album Notes

To long time blues fans throughout the southwest, Buddy Reed remains one of the area's most fluid and powerful practitioner of authentic traditional blues guitar. His guitar style reveals the influence of Hubert Sumlin, Tampa Red, Arthur Crudup and slide masters Muddy Waters, Elmore James and J.B. Hutto. His repertoire reflects his love for early American roots music.

Buddy's definition: "...I'm a roots rock & roll guy that plays the blues." As evident throughout his new release (Livin' It), Buddy has accomplished that which he set out to do back in the early 70's. He's found his own thing, developing a sound all his own

Remaining committed to traditional, no frills, blues guitar on his '56 Silvertone, Buddy's style reflects the man himself-raw & unpolished. His sinuous slide, lascivious lyrics and nasty bar room howl, all make for an infectious effect of heated libido on the dance floor.

Add to that, a mean two-fisted choppin' on keys by "Boogieman" Brett Miller and you get a barrel house rockin', boogie boot-stompin' show hoppin' all the way to, " ...last call for alcohol!"

A natural talent by Al Hixon on drums and some monstrous bass by Dave Brown doing fine back up vocals.

If you like your blues well done, authentic and sexy, you're gonna find Buddy Reed & th' Rip It Ups' new release "Livin' It" a favorite in your collection of roots rockin' traditional blues guitar CDs.

It's fun, entertaining and straight up rocking blues. One of those CD"s you will listen to over and over. Highlights are Rippin" with Reed and Sugar Bee but it's all good, sort of like homeade beans and corn bread. If youre bag is real blues then check out Buddy Reed.

Keeping to traditional, no frills, blues guitar on his 56' Silvertone, Buddy plays with a sweat-drenched intensity that evokes a hint of Sumlin, pinch of Hutto and dash of Diddley with sprinkles of Muddy so sweet. Cover that with saucy lyrics, a nasty bar room howl and sinuous slide. Then add a mean two-fisted choppin' on keys and you get barrel house-rockin', boogie boot stompin' beat. Backing Reed on the CD is his band 'th Rip It Ups: Brett Miller, keys; Al Hixon, drums; Dave brown, Fender bass & upright. The line up on this tasty 10-track release on Ruby Records features a fine mix of good-time, upbeat rhythm; soulful (correct) slow blues; and impressive instrumentals which the band simply jammed loose. There are six originals and four long time fan favorite covers that don't carbon copy, but compliment endearingly. Trademark to Buddy Reed lyric-wise, verses like, "Good God almighty mama, sure feels good…(inside)…" from his bouncy version of the Zydeco classic Sugar Bee and "Wrap your legs around me like a circle 'round the sun…" in Muddy's Blow Wind Blow help make for a sexy, low down & dirty album sure to make you wet…um, I mean…sweat. Turning things loose in the studio, the first two instrumentals capture the raw raunch energy of their live performance. You can almost smell the smoke and booze while listening to Buddy and Brett slay on the Boogerhead track. An unexpected twist on Rippin' With Reed really wakes you up and brings back memories. Of the remaining three originals, it's a tough call between Reed's catchy rhythm and howl on What I Got and my preference to slow blues as is Love My Baby which gives strongest vocal effort on this album. This outstanding release by Buddy Reed & th' Rip It Ups promises long overdue recognition of this most fluid and powerful practitioner of blues guitar. If you like your blues well down, authentic and sexy…grab yourself a copy and prepare to be hooked. -OsusieQ
