Album Notes

Budowitz is the groundbreaking traditional ensemble of klezmer music. Since its founding in 1995, Budowitz has also served as one of Europe’s main training grounds for traditional Jewish music, featuring over 20 musicians in its performances and recordings, including the late Jewish cultural icons, Cili Schwartz and Majer Bogdanski. Their third CD has just been released in collaboration with Swiss National Radio, and their award-winning previous CDs are featured on all of the international compilation CD’s of the best klezmer groups.

Their music features kaleidoscopic renditions of folk music molded into the unique personal group style from the regions of Bessarabia, Galitsia and Bukovina, performed on tsimbl (Jewish dulcimer), 2 violins, 3-string viola, 19th Century C and Eb-clarinets, early bayan (button accordion from 1889), bassetl (shoulder strapped cello) and baraban (drum). The rare repertoire of Budowitz includes pieces gathered through intensive fieldwork in more than 15 countries and includes not only ritual and dance music by Jewish folk composers of the 19th Century but also original works by all the members of Budowitz.

Budowitz has won numerous awards for its accomplishments, among them BBC’s Critics Circle award for best CD, the Belgian Gandalf Award for Best Concert and The Viennese Fritz Spielmann Award. Budowitz has been featured for over 10 years on full-length radio and television shows in Europe and the U.S. The ensemble served as the cultural ambassador of Austria for the millennium celebration of Berlin’s House of Cultures Festival and was invited to commence the opening of the acoustically renowned Luzern Kongresszentrum. They have been featured in concerts worldwide at the most prestigious venues, such as the Amsterdam Concertgebeouw and the Vienna Concert Hall.

Budowitz is a favored klezmer group among radio stations and print media journalists. Their archive has also served as the main resource for West German Radio, Radio Bremen, Swiss National Radio, Deutsche Welle and countless others. Their music has been featured in the award-winning British film, “Some of my best friends are... Jewish / Muslim” (Sandford St. Martin Trust Religious Broadcasting Award) and in the new film by Jes Benstock, "The Holocaust Tourist".

Budowitz Live
author: stuart Lipkowitz

If you have never heard Budowitz play before, this is your chance to hear some the finest, most exciting Klezmer music ever played or recorded--or, really, some of the finest music in any genre ever recorded. These musicians have an astounding ability to combine warmth and intimacy with an exciting, driving performance. The instrumentation is dominated by strings. The two lead violinists (Cookie Segelstein and Tamas Gombai) play with passion, style, and wit; it is amazing to listen to their very different styles; they are unique yet combine so effortlessly when they play together. Christian Dawid is a master clarinetist; his reed playing seems to dance effortlessly on Budowitz's rich, string texture. Joshua Horowitz (playing 19th century button-accordion and tsimbl) arranges much of Budowitz's material. He is a master both of accompaniment and lead playing. The rhythmic accompaniment is rich, lively, intelligent, and flawless. This album is also a fine mini-course in regional styles of Klezmer music; the notes, though not extensive, provide an excellent background for those seeking a little education on culture and tradition in Klezmer music. Although no one will buy a CD because of its cover, this one is a delight. Whether you are a long-time fan of Budowitz and Klezmer music, or a newcomer, this is certainly a recording you should order today.

Its just beautiful the way the single pieces flow into and out of each other, how the separate instruments and their musicians harmonize with each other and how they play the pieces with such sensitivity. What should I say? The Cd is a must have for those new to Klezmer as well as for those who have been their fans for years.

Transcendent!

Budowitz's latest turned a long drive up the Pacific Coast Highway into ... a trip! Thank God for all the roadside pull-outs -- for the times I just had to replay "that" track again, and it demanded full attention.
