Album Notes

For most of my life I have lived in an area dedicated to heavy industry of one kind or another, mines, steel mills, wire factory’s and the trains on which I used to work. So the sound of metal screaming crashing, banging, sometimes and being destroyed sometimes being turned into something new and the heavy engines’ moving coal and people around is a major part of my life.
Then a day came when I heard for what seemed like first time, the beauty of all this sound, for a while it sounded like I was in some vast cathedral, which was constantly under construction.
I decide to capture some of what I heard that day in these musical constructions, by using loops, synthesizes and samples all controlled by a guitar synth, interspersed in heavily distorted electric guitar.
Why loops, well because engines move in circles it seemed to be natural for the project but I added some spice to this by arranging the loops not to trigger on a known time and this added an element of surprise (well surprise to me) to the tracks that took them in strange directions.
I have always been better at expressing myself on the guitar than keyboard and to find how far midi guitars have come since I last looked to get one came as a complete surprise, and with the ability to attach the guitar to a computer opens up a whole world of possibilities in music creation.

This is the first solo album from Building The Cathedral and is a beautiful atmospheric recording of a unique set of ideas the sound quality is superb A collection of calming/startling musical transformations that are both delicate and intricate, you don’t hear much guitar it’s all Synth-sounds and strings and this makes it perhaps some of the most accessible soundscapes/avant garde sound sculptures to date. Extraordinarily beautiful, and highly recommended It’s inventive ambient, great stuff.

Great ambient soundscapes

I tend to be picky about my ambient music; a lot of it tends to leave me a bit cold. This is just great and ever changing within each composition. It's true ambient, meaning no tempos or beats and transitionally very well thought out. This release works great as background music, in the car or intense listening. It has some great dark themes and textures, and never ceases to keep moving through each piece. I recommend this to all who love ambient music, it's great!

Building The Cathedral: Review by J.H.C.O'Callaghan. This music/living electronic structure is something very novel and fresh in the world of digital looping. It can be compared to the Brain Eno and Robert Fripp style of compositions. However, it is so far removed from what is generally known in so-called ambient music. As a teacher and classical composer I was enamoured by its orchestral Gregorian chant atmosphere, and at the same time its unique use of midi guitar and electronic landscapes. It is as if some intelligence from the deepest oceans and/or a being from a strange and wonderful world of endless cascading lights, wishes to share our love of the eternal. This music is very functional. For example, this music functions as meditative and/or environmental music. Its Living! It embraces so much that if someone from 5000 years in the past, or someone 5000 years from the future were to listen to Building the Cathedral-they could relate to every little scintilla and light fibre that this beautiful music evokes. It changes mood and light as if it has its own orbiting sun. I adore music that seems different each time I listen. It is a very good investment. This music requires your heart and soul something that is much needed in the world. Its one of the best cds I've bought for a long time. Best wishes to those among you who obtain this little wonder.
