Beer drinkin' music

notes

Barking dogs, beer and porch songs.

Bulldog singer-songwriter Kenny Tudrick has seen some hard road, and has done many things in rock 'n' roll (some hit, some missed) - enough that when he writes about his life you believe him. From the singer's thin hips and Gram Parsons bangs-in-eyes shag to his sideways swinging Tele and lyrical tender mercies comes the sound of struggle, release, self-pity, anger and loss. Sound affected? Hardly. Tudrick is working the terrain of songwriters, and the only way he can articulate what's loitering in his head is through the music. He's found his voice.

Then there's the band; an ad hoc chemistry that colors the 11 songs with sing-song grace and restraint. You hear glimpses of the Band, Neil Young, electric Dylan and the aforementioned Parsons, all smoldering and lifting; hazily sunny like an alcohol-fuzzy afternoon spent in Topanga Canyon. You can picture "Sister Satellite" drifting off a windswept hillside and through some pine row, soft and then more defined. "Your Reign" marches slowly and climbs, winking at the Velvets along the way. "Shelter" would've fit snugly on Sweetheart of the Rodeo. It's like that.

At times, Tudrick's throaty tenor sounds brittle, but is always appropriate, and gently persuaded by Pete Ballard's melancholic pedal steel lines and Eddie Harsch's flowing Hammond and piano phrases. There's warmth, air, groove and beery jangle; a sparseness that ultimately crescendos, just the way Neil Young used to do it. This record is as infectious as porch songs. • This record will grow on you like a foot fungus...

Right from the opening sounds of the first track this record makes you feel at home. There's an easiness to the band's sound that relaxes you because you know you're in good hands. Sister Satellite and New York, New Girl are about as accessible as music gets. Ain't Right might put that Mick Taylor-era Stones taste in your grill. And just when you thought you had it figured out the last track will catch you guessing wrong.........I can see yoooooou......great guitar sound. Don't forget you have Eddie Harsch playing keys from start to finish on this record, which is never a bad thing.

  • I think Kenny has the most beautiful voice and a great mind. i can feel the word

I love to just sit in the back yard on my lawn chair with a beer and a cigarette and listen to this CD. I could just close my eyes and feel my buzz, you know just get away from the crazy hustle of everyday life. It makes me feel really good. Kennys voice is so meaningful to me.

  • Just good laid back music

I stepped upon this band because good ole Eddie Harsh of the Black Crowes is playing keys on this one, so I just ordered it on good luck not really knowing what to expect and after the very quick delivery time to Germany I found this CD in my mailbox less than a week after I ordered it and had to put it into my player imediately and i was enticed by the nice country flavoured tracks that start off the CD. Track 3 was the first keyboard highlight as it features a typical Ed intro (I hope my memory is correct *lol*) and I bet I had a big smile on my face when I heard that... Only the last track stands out style-wise, a lil psychedelic and definitely interesting, I should lisen to it more times to fully get into it, but I already felt the potential - good job guys, keep on with the playing and Ed, I'll be seeing you in March 2006 in both London and Amsterdam ;-) Peace! Kenny Tudrick, Jay Rowe, Pete Ballard, Eddie Harsch, and Ben Force are the Bulldogs playing on this album. Kenny had the name back when he was a kid. It was his vision to write these tunes and put together this group of damn fine musicians. That being said, "Proud Music of the Storm" is how I describe it. That this band managed to keep it together long enough to release a full-length of their own, before the inevitable crash and burn, is somewhat of a miracle indeed. So, finally here they are sounding very much the same way they do live. And like all the great Outlaw records we've heard and cherish, this collection is served up by the youth who dare present its heart on the tattered sleeve. Here you have some friends of mine who never did belong in the same garage club as their contemporaries. One thing is certain, there are only two types of people for this kind of stuff: the devoted lovers and makers of it, no one in between. These tunes derive from those of that ilk. They feel real enough to be your own, straight from the neighborhood porch. And if you listen you'll hear it in Kenny's jagged voice: the urgent need to share something that has already been played out in his own life-script long before pen was put to paper. Call it what you will, Bulldog rocks harder than Gram Parsons or Waylon ever did, and they're more country than Steve Earle is at the moment. What sets these songs apart from most of what we hear these days is what William Burroughs once referred to as the difference between the bullfighter who fights the bull and the bullshiter who makes passes with no bull there. If you're gonna write about it you've got to go, and in doing so you take the chance of getting gored. We dare not turn away. In these songs you'll hear the end of something drawn out to its last gasp and the beginning of something irrepressible and new and used. You'll hear the garage door slam shut and you'll hear the voices of your youth and young adulthood, and a few dreams that never came true along the way. Above all, you'll hear a renegade band from Detroit who never gave a shit and still don't, but you gotta know who you are in this world Son, and they do.

  • Absolute Best Band In Detroit.
    author: Greg B.

The song writing is amazing. It is dynamic and ecclectic but still very focused. Although Tudrick receives writing credit for all the tunes, there is an undeniable chemistry amongst the entire band. The debut is subtle enough to let the listener create their own portrait of the band's musical identity. Still there is a raw energy to the music that leaves me listening to it over, and over and over.

  • Great Music
    author: Shannon Johnson

I have been listening to the original version of this CD for a LONG time now and very excited it is being released so that everyone has the chance to enjoy great music. Kenny is someone I know personally and my kids think the music ROCKS! (they are 4 and 6) As a mother, (I am going to get main stream now) my children can listen to it and enjoy because there is no swearing and sexual content. I have told him (kenny)that they (Bulldogs) have the youngest fans. THe band has done an amazing job. Can't wait for the follow up! Just waiting for it to be heard nationally and everyone can enjoy it! You guys deserve it, congratulations.

  • A nice dose of alt-country and rootsy rock for ya!!
    author: Ravi

I just ordered this recently and i'm pretty impressed. this band sounds really good and doesn't even sound like a debut album to me! If you're into alt-country with pedal steel and the occasional rock tune, you will really dig this. It has shades of the Burrito Brothers, Gram Parsons, and a bit of Stones, and the singer sounds a bit like Ryan Adams on his older countryish stuff...lots of heart on this record. One of my fav songs on here is Sister Satellite. Very nice harmonies and great piano and organ playing by Eddie highlight the album as he shines all over the disc. I already feel this one will be played many times, it has a bit of a classic vibe to it. Hopefully i'll get to see them someday. Anyone who's interested should check it out.. i have a feeling it may be one of my favorites of the year by the time it is said and done.

  • BULLDOG - Finally !
    author: Fotog INK

Perhaps the best thing you can say about a band is that you desire to have their material at hand, so you can listen to it. Bulldog is such a band. Ever since I saw them ( twice so far) I have been wanting their music in some form, live or otherwise. I'd routinely ask pals I knew who traded in live video or music, if they had anything by Bulldog. "No - but let me know if you find anything..." was often the response . At least I knew I wasn't alone. Well singer-songwriter fans...the wait is over. Much in the vein of moody southern rock kin Neil Young, the Band and Gram Parsons , Bulldog even channels The Allman Brothers and Eagles with their upbeat squaredance tunes. Led by Kenny Tudrick ( Best known for drumming for The Detroit Cobras ) on vocals and guitar , but by no means a one man show, he's admirably backed by a solid band. Fellow Bulldog members Pete Ballard (Steel Guitar) , Jason Rowe (Drums) , Ben Force (Bass), an Eddie (Black Crowes)Harsch (Piano, Organ) - the sound envelops the listen admirably. As the cd starts, picture yourself on a Michigan porch, cold beer in hand, as the sun sets...and you have a perfect idea of whats in store. Tudrick sings in "New York, New Girl" - "I remember sitting on her front porch... Just me and her old man seemed to replace my family...for a while look back now...and it makes me smile." Lyrically, the music suits Tudricks middle vocal range well. Bulldog isn't the kind of music that requires a high register, or screeching southern drawl. Its more about the FEELING the music gives you. The opening track "Crash & Burn" sets the mood with a slow harmonica, and inflections on words that rhyme "back" with "like" . It's a southern, Michigan thing. Being a Dylan / Ryan Adams fan, I'll take any song I can with slide guitar or mouthharp. Bulldog isn't content with simply being mellow all the time , and bust out a stomping beat on "Your Reign" . It'll have you rolling the windows down on a hot summer day, lighting up a smoke and just cruising past your intended location until the song ends . Production values are top notch, and production credit and mixing goes to Kenny , with assistance on the mix by John Smerek. The digipack features a beautiful fold out design which sets an ample mood. The inner cd tray features a cd design which looks like an old album, again a reminder to yesterdays vinyl l.p.'s that the release has more in common with. Underneath, a beautiful illustration by Carrie Williams ( studiocaw.com) is the only other indication of the band, an obvious move to showcase the music , not the bands good looks. Much like the new Ryan Adams album that the design mirrors...( and which I have to admit - good as it is, this release is better ) Bulldog is putting the emphasis BACK on the music. And rightfully so - they earned it. A wonderful strong sophomore effort . I was at Young Soul Rebels in Detroit the day after I got this cd, and they were already playing it over the loudspeaker. How'd I know ? I listened to it the whole way downtown ! It's an indication that music lovers and makers are in the same camp as I . So do yourself a favor, see them live, buy the cd - get into them now. Bulldog - not a Detroit band. A MICHIGAN band.
