“This is a very exciting CD by four marvelous musicians from the Cincinnati area. From beginning to end they hold your attention with interesting arrangements and moving solos. Their outstanding musicianship gives a great jazz feel to every song and each song seems to move right into the next. Frequency really held my attention from start to finish.” -Jamey Aebersold
Frequency is the result of two sessions recorded at The Blue Wisp Jazz Club in July of 2008. After years of various gigs and recording sessions Mike and I realized that we shared many of the same musical concepts. We decided that (besides the need to move past eight long years of woeful politics!) the world could use more vibraphone-bass driven improvised music. In the end the playing on these sessions was spontaneous and relaxed in the familiar confines of the Blue Wisp. The frequency of the moment was more than ideal.
Rusty Burge-vibraphone and marimba
Michael Sharfe-bass
Jim Connerley-piano
Dan Dorff-drums
Rusty Burge teaches percussion/vibes at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He is also a member of Percussion Group Cincinnati, which has toured and recorded extensively for many years.
Michael Sharfe is one of the top working jazz bassists in the midwest. He is the bass player for the legendary Blue Wisp Big Band. His versatility on both upright and electric bass put him in demand for a wide variety artists such as Jamie Aebersold, Bobby Broom, the Psycho Acoustic Orchestra and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra.

A modern masterpiece
author: KWVA Jazz
Frequency was recorded to fulfill a need for more vibe-bass driven improvised music in the world. Not only did the group succeed, but this CD is equally as masterful as classic vibraphone-driven albums from the mid-1960s. Engaging and thoughtful, Frequency captures these gifted musicians doing what they love most. They have an exceptional ability of complimenting each other while moving the listener through their sincere, exciting musical landscape.
Highlghts include "Summer in Central Park," "Elderdown," and "Tribute," a solo by bassist Sharfe with his take on Mingus' "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat," among others. Easily one of the best independent jazz releases of 2009.
