It all started when I got on the 6 o’clock bus …she had a beautiful smile which turned into a great conversation. After maybe 5 blocks, she had to go, and I proceeded to look for her for 3 months on AC Transit – no luck.
Then one day I was sitting on the BART train commuting home, and suddenly she comes running past me to the exit and I literally threw up my newspaper and chased her down the escalator. I hopped onto her bus not caring where it was going; only that she was there.
It turned into a 3 week fling and what a great 3 weeks they were. So I guess that’s what inspired the song.
Which is the case for most of the songs on this CD.
The way it works is I cook some dinner (whoever’s in the room with me at the time is usually the one I collaborate with…Scotty’s usually there a lot so he gets in early on the song – I gotta start charging him rent), then Marzonie comes in and often does his magic with words and guitar, and sometimes we’re all in the mix together. It works out because it just so happens they know what they’re doing and they like my cooking too.
So we were in search of a lead guitar player since my long time buddy Ron Stanley went back to focusing on gambling and vacuum cleaners. But we got him for a few tracks early on the CD.
We ended up replacing him with childhood friend, Jeff Tamelier, whose funky chops can be heard with Tower of Power, Eddie Money, Starship, Huey Lewis…it goes on. We had the good fortune of having him show up; I’d have the amp warmed up, guitar tuned and ready with the red light blinking…we’d try to get him out of his element. It always had a great outcome, mostly because of his intuitive guitar playing!
We ended up filling in some blanks with guest spots by Darcy Slade and Jack Hines.
So that’s it – hope you enjoy.

I think what Jonny was cookin' up was a great CD! I really enjoyed the variety between the up tempo and softer tracks. Excellent guitar work throughout. Pick up this one for your collection, you never know what Jonny might be cookin' up next...

Jonny Burr Rocks!!!!

Yeah, there's some nice ballads like she walks alone, but for the most part this CD kicks butt. The uptempo rockers like "who's in, who's out" are the one's the really get my heart pumpin'! Great songwriting & all the musicianship is top notch, especially some of the Jeff "the tower of power" Tamelier guitar solos. And Big Dog on the Beach is a trip. There's even a song with baritone sax-talk about variety. Overall, it's a great CD that'll make you want to stop by for some of Jonny's cookin'.
