In the summer of 1999, the Hot Buttered Rum String Band headed for California's Sierra Nevada mountains in search of the high lonesome sound of mountain music. After a month of hiking, climbing, pickin' & singin', HBRSB brought back a new sound: High Altitude Bluegrass.

This has been an exciting year for the Hot Buttered Rum String Band. As Swallow Hill Music Association producer Grant Landsbach describes:
"(HBRSB) is quickly establishing itself as one of the
finest young bluegrass bands around."

Accomplishments in 2002 include:
* Premiering at several prestigious festivals and venues, including the Freight
and Salvage, the High Sierra Music Festival, and the Sweetwater Saloon.
* Releasing their second live album, "Live at the Freight and Salvage", which
was praised by the San Francisco Chronicle.
* Sharing the stage with many esteemed colleagues: Darol Anger, Bruce Molsky,
Kris Delmhorst, Tony Furtado, Druha Trava, High Country, and Open Road.
* Continuing to tour successfully out-of-state, developing a devoted fanbase.

The Hot Buttered Rum String Band's music nods to the past and sits squarely in the present. The music appeals to traditional bluegrass aficionados as well as the most discerning folk audiences and dance-hungry jam-band fans. HBRSB thrives in both quiet concert settings as well as wild dance halls. A truly multi-generational audience is growing around this group of musicians who deliver a fresh sound grounded in tradition.

What does 2003 hold in store? HBRSB has just added a hot fiddler to the line-up, making the group a quintet. A long-awaited studio album (recorded using solar power) is soon to be released. The music and the fanbase are growing. Their festival schedule is filling up. Good things are to come.

    Now that these guys are getting popular and big and deservedly so, it is so cool to go back and listen to their sound at its' inception. The talent and virtuosity was already there. Check these guys out, any music fan will not be sorry.

    really like this band and as far as i can see, or hear, this is a pretty accurate statement of what the band can do. i have seen them twice and am soon to add a third show, this album is just wetting my whistle for it.

    This was a great CD! From the opening jazzy clarinet notes of the first tune I was hooked. HBR is an excellent group, and it's impossible not to feel good when you listen to their music. (Though I'm from the East Coast, I hope to see them live someday! :))

    The music is complex and full of vitality, from energetic and brilliant musicians. Certain lyrics also resonate with me. It's good to hear a young band singing about wilderness, politics, looking for love, and especially elephants, animals which I wrestle frequently.

    Can't sit still, can't stop singing along and cannot take it out of the CD player, except for live Butter shows! Naked Blue is amazing.The song writing skills these fellows possess is rare and memorable. They are artists in the truest sense of the word, painting pictures with each of their songs and weaving a story you will absolutely fall in love with! IT leaves you humming long after you walk away from the CD player, I-Pod or show...I've actually been humming their songs for 7 months, since I first saw them!

    i bought this cd just on the reviews of it that i read and i am pleased. it is a very good live show. i've never heard bluegrass flute before, but the flute player makes the cd, which i would categorize as something between jazz, bluegrass, and folk with slight touches of jamband.

    More than bluegrass - it's like folk-rock-swing-jazz-crazygrass. Their 8 originals, plus 1 traditional and 3 covers, along with some fun interaction between the band and the audience make for an enjoyable night of music. The Freight & Salvage is an excellent venue for live recordings - I've been there - so the sound quality is outstanding. You'll like listening to this cd over and over and over, again and again and again.

    For a first album, this cd is simply amazing - lots of energy. Live was definitely the way to go. Great decision on their part. Each member is a gifted songwriter and musician. The Trial of John Walker Lindh is the best, however, their cover of Norwegian Wood really turns the song around. A solid effort from start to finish. I would give it more than 5 stars.
