notes

Into a Boston singer/songwriter scene, seemingly saturated with independent artists bearing guitar strap calluses, Brian wandered north from his hometown of Atlanta, GA, where he had shared stages with future well-knowns such as Shawn Mullins, Josh Joplin, India Arie and Angie Aparo.

He quickly rose to the top, albeit in his own gracious, accommodating, anything-but-arrogant manner. After only a handful of months in beantown (unbeknownst to Brian) you could hear the buzz for an hour before his twinkle-eyed grin would appear on the horizon.

But rather than scramble for the spotlight, Brian made it his mission to bolster the cornucopia of talent in which he found himself engulfed. He initiated "indie-guys night" - with a hat tipped to its indie-grrl predecessors - in conjunction with Club Passim and other well-known Boston-area clubs. He joined numerous song-circles and performed in the round with local songwriters for an array of worthy causes. Music, for Brian, is culture, community, passion - not competition...that is reserved for the basketball court.

That said, we hope he'll forgive us for moving on now to what sets Brian apart. (For there must be a reason why the biggest student-run college radio station in Boston, WERS, plays his new album almost obsessively - they even made a despondent, on-air announcement one morning when they could not find his CD!) Before every show, Brian readies himself to expect only 3 people to turn out. He takes the stage with the certainty that he is there because he loves to play. Therefore, it's a perpetual pleasant surprise when lots of people turn out to witness it--he takes nothing for granted. But really, it's the audience (which consistently numbers well over three) that receives the pleasant surprise when Brian takes the stage. Imagine if Jackson Browne (looks and talent all-inclusive) had been born in the mid-seventies, raised with his father's radio tuned to The Police, Billy Joel, and Genesis, and then went through fervid Sarah McLachlan and Ani DiFranco phases, thanks to his mostly-female, mostly-ahead-of-the-curve, circle of friends...add a dose of Southern charm (with just a trace of an accent) and you have a framework for Brian Webb. Catchy pop hooks? Mournful love (lost) songs? Soulful gospel rock? Stirring vocals? Sense of humor? He's got 'em, and an easy stage presence to boot.

Now all that is left is for you to listen to his record, "Broken Folk," and see what the heck everyone is talking about. [Note to skimpers: some of the most precious gems are buried deep in the track list.] We hope to see you at a show soon.

Loved the cd. Everyone who hears it in my car immediately wants to know who he is! I liked this cd so much I'm buying 2 more copies to give to friends-- yes the songwriting and honesty are so compelling that you would feel forever guilty if you burned it. Also a side note, if you can catch Brian live it's unbelievable. Not a show to be missed!

    author: Pär Winberg

Geeh… Am I weak for these singer songwriters in the neighbourhoods of Midwest Rock. Brian plays a very cool kinda music somewhere between Neal Casal, Gin Blossoms, Del Amitri, Ryan Adams and The Jayhawks. And he’s doin it real good. And the songwriting is also real damn fine. Sure, nothing new under the sun, but in this style of music, it’s enough if the guy sings good (Brian is a real good singer) and write good songs (as I said, the level is VERY high here) and that the production have a cool and solid production (this album sure has…) And well – that’s about it. First out “Shame” gets the album a great starts, and it continues with the Gin Blossom smelling “She Was Honest” and third out you have the Jayhawks kinda “Wrestle The Ground” with beautiful picking banjos and a cool mandola. And in hat way it continues. In Brian Webb you will sure have a new friend if you adore the names I mentioned earlier in the review. And then I haven’t mentioned the 6.52 long “Talk To You” with clever lyrics and a naked production… Lovely piece of work. Check him up at once folks…

    author: Madi Stasco

This CD describes somuch that has happenedin this artist's life and just goes to show how music is the best source of self expression. This music is just as good as James Taylor or Bob Dillon. Broken Folk is just that good.

  • real music
    author: christine

This is a fantastic CD. I have not stopped listening to it since it arrived, and songs from it are going on all tapes I make for friends. Brian is a very talented musician and on this album it shows. Not only is he a great singer and proficient guitarist, his lyrics are intelligent, universal, and often profound. And he's a really nice guy. :^)

  • put this cd in your player and keep it there
    author: Heather

I first saw Brian this summer and his live performance was so enchanting that I bought this cd immediately. It stayed in my player all summer, and I made a tape of it for my car. The songs on Broken Folk are the antidote to boredom, complacency, and apathy.

  • He is such an amazing singer/songwriter
    author: Tina

I absolutely love this CD. Probably my favorite CD in my collection. He has an amazing voice, and his lyrics are so easy to relate to. I saw him live this winter, and he is such an amazing person. Great CD!

  • He's Outstanding
    author: David Dodge

"Broken Folk" has some outstanding songs. They'll leave you with a happy tune in your head and insightful words to ponder. Noteably "leaving atlanta" & "walk alone." All of them are good though. He writes about both lesbians & God, and everything between. I saw him last summer, and his live shows sound beautiful. He got big in Sweden or some European country last year, and he should blow up sooner or later in America for sure. BE SURE TO PICK UP "the Fortunate Poets," his earlier album. I listened to it last night on a drive and came home with a grin from ear to ear.

  • Unquestionable the best album of 2002
    author: Jos van den Boom

In my opinion this is unquestionable the best singer/songwriter-cd of 2002!!!!!!
