notes
The Buselli Wallarab Jazz Orchestra (BWJO) is a seventeen piece, professionally staffed ensemble based in Indianapolis, IN featuring an amazing array of talent drawn from the area's rich base of jazz musicians. In addition to their respective instrumental skills, co-leaders Mark Buselli and Brent Wallarab are very gifted big band composers and arrangers.
The BWJO's first release, Happenstance, was recorded at the famed Echo Park Studios in Bloomington, IN at two two-day sessions in 1999 and released later that year. (Please see below for information on our latest recording project).
Appearing on the BWJO's Midcoast Music label, Happenstance received wide praise in the local and national press:
"What sets this ensemble apart from and above so many others are the impeccably designed compositions and charts by the co-leaders, each one a lavish storehouse of radiant light and elusive shadow."
--Jack Bowers,
Jazz Improv Magazine
"This amazing debut recording establishes the Buselli Wallarab Jazz Orchestra as one of the premier big bands in contemporary jazz."
--Dr. David Baker
Distinguishsed Professor of Jazz Studies
Indiana University School of Music
"You won't hear any stock arrangements from [the BWJO] and they don't do dance arrangements...this is what state of the art jazz is all about."
--Chuck Workman
Nuvo Newsweekly
The BWJO is currently at work on their second CD, a collection of original, commissioned arrangements of Hoagy Carmichael tunes titled "The Music of Hoagy Carmichael." The CD will be released in February of 2003.
The BWJO actively performs, records, and provides various educational outreach programs (for adults and kids, focused on jazz) within Indiana and the Midwest. For much more on all the group's activities, please visit: www.bwjo.org
