Album Notes

Showcasing his range as a pianist, New Age Solo Pianist James Cahall's sophomore album, "Coming Home," takes listeners on a breathtaking journey through the natural world. Each song urges self-searching, but always leads back to the happiness we derive from the unconditional love of those closest to us. From the rising of the tides to the ending of a season, James' varied collection brings life's many changes into perspective. For the world traveler or someone content to sit by the fireplace, this album will feel like you've come home in mind, body, & soul. With local performances and a growing online fan base, James shares his music to bring forward hope and optimism from deep within the collective spirit.

With the gift of a garage-sale organ at age 5, James began his lifelong musical journey. The son of a disabled mother and her care provider-turned companion, his financially meager childhood was blessed by a supportive and spiritually rich home in Ukiah, CA. “Though my family had to make difficult choices, they never sacrificed my musical education.” James’ music is greatly influenced by his early mentors and New Age artists Thomas Ganoung and Spencer Brewer as well as the Classical greats Frederic Chopin and Sergei Rachmaninoff. “I found my voice through exploring the beauty and sorrow of their timeless music and its impact on my life.”

James now enjoys surfing and disc golf, communing with nature in a way that feeds his creative impulses. Alongside a challenging yet rewarding career in Aerospace Engineering, he devotes his free time to his true passion of creating music. “Composing allows me to break free of the worries of tomorrow, and focus on the present moment.”

His two albums, The Day Before Tomorrow & Coming Home, tell a story of love, confusion, and hope and have been compared to albums by New Age pianists Jim Brickman and George Winston. Through broken 10th chord progressions, the The Day Before Tomorrow’s opening song, “Superhero in the Musicbox,” conveys the universal dream of a child to make his mark on the world. In Coming Home’s “Skipping Stones,” the listener is taken on a modal journey through regrets of past transgressions and the joy that comes with moving on. A relaxing winter tribute, Coming Home’s “Embers,” evokes memories of times spent with family and friends, huddled around a warm fire.

James performs at 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica, CA. and small local venues including the Jeanie Madsen Art Gallery. His emotional collection of soul-seeking melodies serves as a foundation for his future works. Ultimately, he wants his music to be a source of strength for his audience. “Live each day as if it were your last. Cherish each moment as if it were for the first time.”

Coming Home - A Breath of Fresh Air
author: Greg Ryan

One of the first thing one tries to do when reviewing a new artist is to find comparisons with artists in the same genre. This is, perhaps, to give the artist a boost by equating them to their superiors or mentors or, maybe, simply to boast the reviewer’s own knowledge of the area. With James Cahall’s second album: ‘Coming Home’, this proved difficult. It is true to say that ‘Shades of Autumn’ gives the rhythmic and contemplative musicality of Spencer Brewer and ‘Starlight Crossroads’ presents the open ended and excitingly unpredictable melodies championed by David Lanz. However, when looking at the album as a whole, ‘Coming Home’ serves as an impressive testament that James Cahall is able stand on his own two feet in the world of solo piano. In the ever tough struggle to get noticed, it’s all too easy to fall into the trap of sacrificing good melodies for impressive sounding runs and overly complex chord patterns. However, when listening to ‘Coming Home’, the listener is given the sense of freedom. It is as if, although inevitably influenced by the greats, what is being produced is flowing from the heart and it doesn’t take long for this to become apparent. I initially found ‘Shades of Autumn’ an adventurous, dare I say risky, choice to kick off the album due to the anarchic blend of passionate improvisation and slow moving, dream-like melodies. It soon becomes clear, though, that this is Cahall’s intention. It beautifully establishes itself as music built on instinct; music built around the character of the musician and the journeys he has made – a technique that can’t be taught in piano lessons. This being said, Cahall shows he is anything but lacking in technical prowess with “Skipping Stones” – a lyrical and dynamic gem of a song which deserves recognition beyond the generalisations of a short review. It begins with a flowing and intricate melody that slowly builds into an almost visible image of ‘skipping stones’. As the bass brings the song to a crescendo, the listener is swept up and given views of soaring countryside before being dropped back to the original melody with ease. This brilliantly structured and mastered piece, stands as a great credit to Cahall as a musician and as an artist. I single out ‘Skipping Stones’ because it brings home another important aspect of new age piano; that of painting pictures. ‘Coming Home’ takes you on a journey which is as much visual as it is musical. “The Passing Storm” takes you on an incredible journey, whisking you up into the storm for the first half, and giving you ample time to close your eyes and breathe in the second – a perfect representation of what the title prepares you for. “The Rising Sun” begins at dawn with a calm and simple theme and, like the sun, rises in intensity throughout to a euphoric climax. This is overall a very enjoyable album to listen to; it shares journeys through an excitingly varied number of styles and techniques while remaining utterly unpretentious. I look forward to hearing more from James Cahall in the future.

Maravillosa y Emocionante Banda Sonora!.
author: REVIEWS NEW AGE

"Shades of Autumn" es simplemente sorprendente. "As Daylight Fades" dibuja estrellas y luna.

The Joy of Coming Home
author: BT Fasmer

James Cahall’s new album Coming Home is in many ways a homecoming. For the artist himself it is a realization of a dream to compose and release piano music, which he had to postpone for years. For the listener the homecoming aspect is all in the album’s atmosphere; the bright and positive melodies illustrate the happy feeling of a long-sought homecoming. Ask anyone, being away is great – but nothing is better than coming home! On a solo piano album, variation is the key to success. Even though all songs on Coming Home are quite fast (which I guess is due to youthful energy – the artist being 27 years old). I feel that there is more than enough variation to keep one’s attention throughout the 58-minute long album. All songs are long, between 4-6 minutes, with a melodic focus. I must add that are a few slow parts too, like passages on the thoughtful title track. The album starts with the song Shades of Autumn. It has just the right amount of melancholy for such a title. Autumn is not just the end of summer – but the beginning of something new too. The leaves have to fall off in favor of new growth. My favorite track on the album is Pearl’s song. It is that type of melody that just captures the moment and makes it impossible to think sad thoughts. I was also moved by Midnight Dancer. This song has a very nice build-up that truly shows James Cahall’s skills as a composer. Coming Home is an impressive album from a young artist. This reviewer concurs: James Cahall is now home. May this be a place of happiness and creativity in the years to come!
