Album Notes

Singer-songwriters Greg Beattie and Victoria Blythe, along with instrumentalist Dave Decker, combine voices and a half dozen acoustic instruments into original songs that are both fresh and timeless--from the roots of American traditional song forms to explorations of contemporary sounds. Greg and Victoria married in the mid-90's, quickly produced two albums, then (a little more slowly) produced two children. Now ten years later, they are back in the studio, with their third CD, an all acoustic folk/roots music collection, Green Girl.

All along they have been writing, listening and improving. Their songs have captured the prestigious Kerrville New Folk prize, grand prize in the West Coast Songwriters International song contest as well as first place in two additional categories, the Napa Valley Emerging Songwriter award, West Coast Songwriter’s Association Song of the Year honors, and have appeared in TV shows and movies. Their songs have been recorded by other artists and on numerous compilations with such artists as Joan Baez and Cheryl Wheeler.

Their live show is a mix of Victoria’s soaring, ethereal vocals and hauntingly beautiful fiddle on pure folk ballads and sultry jazz-fusion torch songs, Greg’s energetic and insightful musical treatment of birth, death and everything in between, and Dave’s constantly creative lead-guitar commentary.

Their new album, Green Girl, is the culmination of nearly 10 years of writing, performing and dreaming since their prior release--songs that are varied but genuine representations of the many roads they've travelled. Also heard on the album are Bass wizard Sam Bevan, the insanely talented (and sometimes insane) Joe Craven, god of the high guitar Tim Ellis, always-tasteful Jim Norris on drums, and many others. The album was engineered and co-produced by John Jacob, whose patience, good judgment, great ears and good heart made the process a pleasure.

REVIEWS

Great Album
author: Paul Roberts
Green Girl is a terrific album. I didn't know about this band until recently. I found them by following one link to another on the internet and discovered them. What a jewel of an album! I bought their two previous albums at a concert, but Green Girl is far and away the best in my opinion. I particularly love Driving Him Away, In the Peace of my Love and Constant Love.

Just Beautiful
author: Lia Nagase
I have followed Calaveras for over 10 years now, and they just keep getting better. Green Girl blends maturity of the music and lyrics with themes of the innocence of youth and the experiences of everyday life. I always walk away from listening to this album feeling good. It was also a favorite of our baby boy. We called it his "magic music", as it would calm him down when he cried. We never put him in the car without having Green Girl with us. It is a solid cd you will enjoy listening to from beginning to end.
