Album Notes

"...it's an impressive release indeed (...) Their crisp and nicely layered compositions touch on a world of influences including ska, tango, waltzes, circus and cartoon music, Middle Eastern/Balkan modes, and outright avant-garde, and are generally bright and amiable, but odd and occasionally even unsettling elements hover around the edges."

"One moment you’re following the band through post-Zappa-esque Jazz Rock noodling, then the band are playing pure circus music... the confluence of genres is so professional that it’s easiest to place Calle Debauche in a genre all of their ownn"

""Calle Debauche sure know how to have fun. They write happy music that's a delightful mash-up of Balkan folk and Mothers of Invention rock (...) The tunes on this disc will bring a smile to your face and put a bounce in your step for the rest of the day."

Calle Debauche is an instrumental art rock band from Tucson, Arizona, consisting of sax, tuba, marimba, guitar, and drums. The band's self titled album (out now on Egg Helmet Records) mixes the intricacy of progressive rock with punk energy, musicianship borrowed from metal, and an openness to experimentation. Over the course of twelve songs, the five musicians manage to seamlessly merge influences as diverse as Frank Zappa, extreme metal, Eastern European folk music, and ska, while never losing focus on the song writing, and always sounding like a band.
.. Formed in 2006 as a guitar/bass/drums trio, the group (Mohadev - guitar, Frederic Malter - drums, Dan Holberry - bass) first began to draw attention outside of Tucson with the self-released cd Potemkin Carnival (2007), which was unanimously praised by those who heard it, and voted one of the 100 best "progressive" releases of 2007.
.. The band soon realized that the lineup would need to be expanded, as the recording process had resulted in songs too elaborate to be recreated by a trio. Chris Halvorsen joined on marimba, and was followed shortly by Andorran saxophonist Guillem Sarle and tuba player David LeGendre, who took over the low end from Dan. The new lineup quickly made a name for itself, wowing audiences with their original compositions as well as covers by the Mothers of Invention and group improvisations.
