Album Notes

If you had less than a year to live, what songs would YOU record?

That was the prospect facing singer, songwriter, author and AIDS activist Michael Callen, who, despite having achieved widespread notoriety as a co-inventor of safe(r) sex - a founder of the People With AIDS self-empowerment movement - a founder of community-based AIDS research - and a member of the world's most famous a cappella, gay male, politically aware group, THE FLIRTATIONS, wanted to be remembered as a singer.

LEGACY features such musical luminaries as Holly Near, Cris Williamson, Tom Robinson, Tret Fure, David Lasley, Arnold McCuller, Fred Hersch, John Bucchino and Steve Sandberg.

LEGACY was nominated for nine awards in six categories by the judges of the first annual Gay & Lesbian American Music Awards (the GLAMAS); it won four awards, including Album of the Year, Male Artist of the Year, Best Group Recording and Best Choral Recording.

Michael's unique political and activist voice is memorialized in New York City's Chelsea District, where the former Community Health Project has been re-christened the Michael Callen-Audre Lourde Community Health Center.

His equally strong, serious, funny, and sometimes just plain stunning musical voice, also deserves to be heard.

REVIEWS

Legacy
author: Erin Stevenson
This is a very biased review, since I knew Michael in his last year of life. The album is a strong testament to the power of love and to the power of personal commitment to making this world of ours a more accepting and loving place to live. At the time of the album his lungs were seriously scarred from KS lesions, but you would never know it from some of the soaring passages that demanded his voice to touch the Heavens. This album captures the scope of his love of music from the blusey riffs of Nothing Lasts forever to the romantic Love Worth Fighting For. Do yourself a favor and get this album, it's noteworthy not just for its messages of hope, love, salvation and forgiveness, but for the enduring strength of passion if the face of certain death. It's a great tribute to Michael.

author: Rikk
If you have a love for beautiful musical arrangement, and a voice that is from the heavens, this CD will absolutely put you in a trance. The lyrics hit home and make you really think, and the poetic way in which every song is delivered is nothing less than perfection. There is not ONE bad track on this CD. This CD changed my life. It's magical.
