ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Hailing from the southern port city of Bari, in the province of Apulia, Italy, comes Camera Soul (also known as "Soul Chamber" in English).

Armed with catchy lyrics, melodies, sweet harmonies, and irresistible horn lines reminiscent of 1970s-1980s popular soul and jazz-rock fusion groups, Camera Soul is a sparkling example of the amazing and original songwriting from brothers Piero and Pippo Lombardo, as well as that of lead vocalist and lyricist, Serena Brancale.

TIMKAT is honored to sponsor this rising group for album distribution in the United States. ________________

If Words Don't Speak, it is evident that the music, arrangements, vocal expertise, engineering, and production from Italy's CAMERA SOUL most certainly do!

The new album from the Bari- and Verona-based troupe is cleverly infused with professional songwriting, full horn line arrangements, intelligent soul, jazz, and blues soloistic ideas, and possesses the ability to appeal to a broad range of music fans, ranging from Pop, Disco, House, and Soul, to R&B and finally all the way to jazz.

Produced by Mr. Marco Rossi of Azzurra Music, led by songwriter / musician / arranger powerhouse brothers Piero and Pippo Lombardo of Puglia, the southern "California of Italy", and all-English lyrics written and sung by the talented Serena Brancale, the album is the culmination of a ten year project that features eleven diverse tracks; only three of which are covers. The remaining eight charts showcase original and complex songwriting, as well as thoughtful lyrics on par with the legends covered (Lionel Ritchie, Stevie Wonder, and Earth, Wind & Fire) and the production value of the album exposes the professional lineup of musicians to such transparency that there is nowhere to hide and no room for error. There is no need to worry about that though; every voice, even in the most layered and complex arrangements, is well-heard and holds its own to create a masterwork that brings 1970's soul directly to us in 2012.

The first three tracks on the album are Lombardo Brothers and Brancale originals, beginning with the title track ("Words Don't Speak"). This is a sunny and soulful jazz waltz that would likely appeal to fans of early 1980s smooth jazz and soul, heralded by Brancale's smoky, sultry vocals and accompanied later by the warm, delicious guitar of Francesco Palmitessa. With the second track, "Again", Lombardo and Brancale step up the complexity of the songwriting, especially during the innovative bridge section, to create tension as Brancale pleads with her lover not to "cry again". Both of these tracks would play very well on either soul, blues, or even smooth jazz radio stations. With the third track, "Born to Be (Forever) Mine", Camera Soul winds down into a soft and intelligent slow jam, again featuring Palmitessa's luxurious guitar solo work and Pippo Lombardo's masterful horn arrangements (tightly delivered by Luca Toso, saxes and Stefano Cavallin, trumpet).

Midway through the album, Camera Soul delivers a fantastic upbeat house/disco edition of Lionel Ritchie's classic, "Love Will Conquer All", followed by another Lombardo/Brancale original soul ballad, "All Dark", showcasing Brancale's wide vocal range and deep emotion as she tells the story of a love that is not being experienced the same way between two people. Next, Camera Soul expertly takes on a tight and sublime rendition of Earth, Wind & Fire's seldom-heard chart, "Miracles", and through its many layers of instrumentation and accompaniment, does not disappoint.

Camera Soul keeps the funk train rolling on the eighth track, "I Am", featuring fun and well-written unison horn lines, and drives hard to my favorite track of the album, "Zigzags" -- the pulsating disco highlight of the party that spotlights (among all else!) the tightness of CAMERA SOUL's rhythm section. Beppe Sequestro, ever flawless throughout the entire album, hits the 70s style on the head with his excellent slap bass; Francesco Palmitessa doesn't miss with his essential guitar rhythms and vamps, and drummer Mimmo Campanale drives the groove relentlessly, with Pippo Lombardo completing the section with a great (outside/inside) piano solo. This track alone is a perfect example of the amazing songwriting, soloistic capabilities, masterful arranging, vocals, and harmonic complexity that this professional band of musicians brings to the table.

The album closes with first the classic Stevie Wonder track, "Whereabouts", well-arranged and executed by the group, and finally to the last Lombardo/Brancale original, a deeply emotional, bluesy ballad called "Suddenly". Regarding Brancale's vocals, while her work on the entire project is tasteful and excellent, this final track allows us to hear deep emotion of her heartache. To further set the mood and groove of the story, the Lombardo Brothers include a nice addition of Hammond B3 organ about a minute into the track. The style of the tune reminded me of Lenny Kravitz's "The Difference Is Why" from Mama Said and is a good closer to a fantastic album.

CAMERA SOUL features a professional lineup from both north and south Italy, intelligent musicianship, songwriting, lyricism, and arranging, and is a must-own for fans of classic 1970s soul, disco, and R&B.

TIMKAT is pleased to sponsor this international horn sensation for distribution in the United States. We truly hope you enjoy this discovery as much as we have!

Camera Soul Review - @CriticalJazz

5-Star Delight
There is a right way and a wrong way to use social media in the music industry. Social media is all about self promotion and probably the cheapest, fastest and most cost effective means of getting ones name in front of the public. I stumbled across Camera Soul while on twitter and here we are. I checked out the web site first and was amazed at the sound. While this ensemble is part of the sonic mother load I seem to have hit with artists from Italy, there is an intriguing hybrid of soul, jazz, blues and a touch of bossa for flavor. The sound is warm and open as that of a live studio recording. While this release could easily be cast in the smooth jazz pile of new releases, the error would be unforgivable. Aside from the lack of mind numbing "programming" that serves little but to cut down on musician payroll and aid the rhythmically challenged, vocalist Serena Brancale's vocals have an all most chameleon like effect in direct proportion to the sonic colors the band is painting from on each subsequent tune.

Originals have a natural organic flow while the tunes themselves are most contemporary winding up with a tune within a tune. This deceptively subtle approach taken by the band as musical collective adds texture and depth and absolutely unlimited cross-over appeal. The smoother side of jazz has struggled to find that new sound to help slide a wedge in the revolving door of smooth jazz stations either changing to a format that works or closing up shop entirely. "Again" opens up this release with a delightful soulful spin, lyrically solid and the pop of bassist Beppe Sequestro is spot on. The lyrical flow of a horn section that obviously listened to a Chicago record or two works as the sonic glue binging this marvelous septet together. Guitarist Francesco Palmitessa turns in a tasty solo and helps wrap this tune up nicely. A danceable cover to the Lionel Ritchie tune "Love Will Conquer All" breathes new life into a somewhat forgotten hit from yesterday. Drummer and percussionist Mimmo Campanale own the pocket while Serena Brancale's vocals work hand in glove with the guitar solo from Palmitessa, jazz sensibilities more on a more contemporary groove with an organic nuance that is hard to shake. "Bossanova" is the musical equivalent of the sexy little black dress, an air of mystery with a sexy back beat you feel with your hips and hear with your feat.

To call this release a retro soul or dance release from the late 1970's would be a gross over simplification. While certain genre roots are clearly unmistakable, what sets Word's Don't Speak apart would be the ingenious hybrid of soul, pop, and even a little disco but with more global jazz related sensibilities. In the hands of lesser talent this release could have easily died a self indulgent death in post production but instead we have a true working band that is dialed in to a lyrical sense of purpose. I have never bought into the notion of European jazz and still don't. What I buy into is a first call band that happens to be from Italy and is capable of creating their own sound with top notch engineering, production and above all performance.

A delightful change of pace and easily a 5 star release! Italy has proven once again to be my musical easy button.

Tracks: Again; Born To Be; Love Will Conquer All; All Dark; Bossanova; Miracles; I Am; Zigzags; Whereabouts; Suddenly.

Personnel: Serena Brancale: voice; Pippo Lombardo: keyboards; Francesco Palmitessa: guitar; Beppe Sequestro: bass; Mimmo Campanale: drums & percussion; Luca Toso: sax; Stefano Cavallin: trumpet.

Groove Loves Melody

Camera Soul
From Groove Loves Melody: http://www.groovelovesmelody.com/2011/09/26/camera-soul-words-dont-speak/

From Italy, Camera Soul brings Words Don’t Speak, eleven songs (eight of which are originals) that primarily bask in the flavor of U.S. soul/jazz of 1977-1982. Along with the contributions of the accomplished musicians in the group under the production of keyboardist, Pippo Lombardo, the addition of the Serena Brancale on vocals make the project particularly warm and inviting. Standouts here are the original tracks, “Born to Be (Forever Mine)”, “Bossanova”, the Maurice White-penned, “Miracles”, and the cover of Lionel Ritchie’s “Love Will Conquer All”. Truthfully, there are no bad songs on this project and if you’re in the mood for soul songs from that aforementioned era, this disc is a welcome new find.

"A Must Buy for those seeking to treat their ears..."

The wind and rain may be battering Britain, but in my household there’s nothing by sunshine and warm feelings brought on by the music of a group of Italian musicians – collectively known as ‘Camera Soul‘ (or Soul Room in English).

Formed by highly respected artists and brothers, Piero & Pippo Lombardo, ‘Camera Soul’ is the latest project in a career spanning over a decade and the album ‘Words Don’t Speak' shows exactly why the brothers have lasted so long in the business.

Having previously formed ‘Marchio Bossa‘ back in 2001 and achieving success across Europe with their cool fusion of Bossanova, Jazz and Samba, the Lombardo brothers decided it was time to start a new venture without straying too far from their jazz roots.

Now featuring the amazing vocals by Serena Brancale and backed up by a talented mix of musicians, ‘Camera Soul‘ brings you sound missing from todays music market.

With a blending of Jazz, Funk, Dance and Soul music, this album has it all to chase the blues away.

Look out for the tracks, ‘Zigzags‘, ‘Bossanova‘, ‘I Am‘, ‘Miracles‘ (originally by Stevie Wonder) and their brilliant rendition of Lionel Richie’s hit ‘Love will conquer all‘ which has a Jamiroquai feel to it and one of my personal faves.

The album ‘Words Don’t Speak‘ by ‘Camera Soul‘ is a must-buy for those seeking to treat their ears to some real feel-good music by talented musicians and songwriters.

Review: Amazing & Smooth Jazz

Camera Soul : Rated 10/10 Stars By Listeners!
If you like the sound of European jazz, then you will truly enjoy this release from Camera Soul entitled Words Don’t Speak. It’s from the same team that brought us Italian Bossa Bar by Marchio Bossa. This is an Italian release which features a total of 11 songs, 8 of which are original compositions. The overall sound of this release reminds us of the soul/jazz sounds from latter 70s to the early 80s. Keyboardist and producer Pippo Lombardo has enlisted a top notch group of musicians for this album, which features vocals by Serena Brancale. Top tracks include , “Born to Be (Forever Mine),” “Bossanova,” the Maurice White-penned, “Miracles,” and the cover of Lionel Ritchie’s “Love Will Conquer All.”

Review: Buelent Saman's 'Muzik Tavisiyeleri' (REVIEW IN TURKISH)

Camera Soul' is "Beautiful, Impressive, Takes You Into a Different World"

Ben tekrar okunanlardan özellikle Richie'nin Love Will Conquer All adlı parçasını beğendim, parça harika bir düzenleme ile kabuk değiştirmiş.
