ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Camera Soul
Not For Ordinary People (2013)
Liner Notes: Kathryn Ballard Shut (ASCAP)

The album that you hold in your hands right now is a child of the magic and global power of the Internet. Born in early 2013 between a masterly songwriting and arranging team of two legendary brothers (Piero and Pippo Lombardo) and a powerfully talented vocalist, composer, and lyricist (Serena Brancale) from Bari (Apulia) Italy, together in collaboration with a lifelong jazz pianist and composer from Denver (Colorado) USA (Kathryn Ballard Shut), Not For Ordinary People creatively has lived up to its name. Even more stunning, the four composers on the album have not yet met in person as of this writing, but somehow have managed to channel each others’ musical thoughts to create an exciting sophomore release for Camera Soul.

The global musical partnership began on Twitter in May 2012, when Piero reached out to me in a tweet, randomly asking me to follow a link to the group’s debut album, Words Don’t Speak. I followed, listened, loved what I heard, and as a result, wrote a favorable review on JazzTimes Magazine’s Community Pages. What began as a professional fan admiration blossomed over the year into a “Twitter-friendship”, grew further into a lyrical writing partnership, then into a distribution partnership agreement between Azzurra Music and TIMKAT Entertainment to market Camera Soul’s debut in the United States, and finally, into a trusted songwriting partnership and friendship. The journey has been no less than amazing.

How does one write songs together by solely using the Internet? In our case, Piero, Pippo, Serena, or I would work on an idea, record a short demo, then email the mp3 file to each other for further ideas and/or lyrics. I usually received an email from Piero, asking for help in writing lyrics to a song that the team in Italy was about to complete. I would listen to the feel of the tune and write meaningful ideas to accompany what I heard, then overdub the demo by singing the lyrics to a sample melody on the track. I would then send it back to the brothers, asking for their feedback and leaving the sample open to changes. Within a few days – sometimes within hours -- I would receive an email that said that’s perfect – that’s exactly what we were looking for, thank you! In one case, I sent the brothers a song that I had written that needed a tight melody line; they worked on it, sent it back, and surprised me by asking for permission to include it on the album (“Locked Inside”). On another, I did a deep translation of a song that the brothers had previously written and recorded in Italian (“Ama”), just because I felt that the story needed to be told in English to appeal to a global audience.

By riding on the infectious riffs, amazing horn lines, and world-class talent of the Brothers Lombardo and Serena Brancale, it has been a true privilege to have earned such respect and trust as a fellow songwriter and lyricist, and an additional honor to have been asked to write the liner notes. However, such songwriting cannot stand alone. When we add the soulfully rich talents of vocalist Serena Brancale, guitarist Francesco Palmitessa, bassist Beppe Sequestro, drummer Mimmo Campanale, saxophonist Luca Toso, and trumpeter Stefan Cavallin, together with Pippo Lombardo himself on the keys, wonderful engineering, and executive producer Marco Rossi guiding the whole show, the Internet songwriting dream finally becomes audible life on thirteen unique tracks, all with compelling and universal stories to tell, set to modern soul and Latin jazz grooves throughout the effort.

Now it’s your turn to judge the fruits of this “not so ordinary” global songwriting team. We invite you to dance to and share Not For Ordinary People with loved ones and throughout the moods of your life – in love, joy, loss, and redemption. We believe there is tale within that will put music to your story, as it has to ours.

We love ...

SoulTracks: Camera Soul - 'Not for Ordinary People'
“Not For Ordinary People is such a well-conceived project from start to finish … We’re told that the R&B listener doesn’t want to hear bands, and the R&B band became all but extinct in mainstream R&B. That makes a group such as Camera Soul – and the music they make – pretty extraordinary.”

Camera Soul - "Not For Ordinary People"
Camera Soul is perhaps one of only three European acts with the talent to crash the American market for contemporary jazz in a meaningful way.
Brent Black / @CriticalJazz

Take contemporary jazz sensibilities and combine them the influences of Earth Wind and Fire and Tower of Power and you have one of the most prolific sounds to come out of Europe since Down To The Bone. The sophomore release Not For Ordinary People is the natural evolution for this world class group of both studio and live performance artists. An incredibly innovative hybrid of British acid jazz and American funk to create a new sound that fittingly originates in Italy, a virtual sonic gold mine.

American radio programmers would be quick to slap a smooth jazz tag on this collective but that would be the very definition of a rush to judgement. Not For Ordinary People is fresh but with a decidedly retro groove of Tower of Power in their prime. Artistic comparisons are inherently unfair but when dealing with an act from outside the United States, a point of reference will certainly give you an idea of what their groove is all about and it is indeed a righteous groove. If the Big Apple had a sonic pulse, this may well be it. The lead vocals of Serena Brancale are spot on and as flavorful as any artist you can name working here in the States. Camera Soul is a global collective led by composer-arrangers, and brothers Piero and Pippo Lombardo. Denver- based pianist and ASCAP composer, Kathryn Ballard Shut contribute the lyrics to "Locked Inside." This particular tune flips the more traditional "smooth" sound of the first release to a soulful and soul filled ballad that runs in perfect parallel to the popping tile track "Not For Ordinary People."

Smooth jazz gets a bad rap and on occasion deservedly so. A smooth jazz guitarist once told me an artist will be as creative as he or she feels the need to be and herein lies the problem. A relatively stagnant genre that has attempted to limp by based on the pretentious vibe of the "chill effect." No change, no growth, no innovation has caused a revolving door in a radio format long since left for dead. Camera Soul and Not For Ordinary People welcome you to the land of rhythm and groove - big difference.

The Music of Camera Soul
July 23, 2013

Camera Soul is a new project that comes to us from Italy and that will surprise followers of Smooth Jazz.

CAMERA SOUL is a project that is leaping onto the international smooth jazz music scene from Italy. Behind the helm are brothers Pippo and Piero Lombardo, two artists that we had met through their previous work with Marchio Bossa. This former band was created by the Brothers Lombardo in the year 2001 and they have released half a dozen albums in the Jazz-Bossa style. Now, Pippo (keyboards) and Piero (guitar) are collaborating once again with Camera Soul.

Camera Soul – Not For Ordinary People

The Camera Soul effort heralds a significant musical stylistic departure from what our protagonists have delivered up until now. There are a few songs that showcase the brothers’ Bossa sound, but the new sound structure largely recalls Soul and Funk from the ‘80s. Camera Soul is a band that not only delivers this sound, but does so from a Mediterranean point of view, similarly to releases in Spain from the Tony Manero Foundation. The horn arrangements remind us heavily of Tower of Power and each of the tracks is led by the distinctively sensual voice of Serena Brancale, also of Italy.

Camera Soul’s work is not unique; however, lately we have experienced a resurgence of our favorite music. You may also enjoy new albums from Andrew Neu, Marcos Valle, Robin Bramlett, and George Duke, all offering smooth jazz of the highest quality.

Camera Soul - 'Not For Ordinary People'
Two years following the debut album, "Words Don’t Speak", Camera Soul presents a new album, entitled "Not For Ordinary People", again released by Azzurra Music [TIMKAT Entertainment, Americas]. It is a wonderful and joyful dip into the unforgettable past, brimming with rhythms and harmonies that take us back to the late 70's Soul Funk, where electronics counted for little, robust bass lines dominated, horn lines enveloped melodies, and listeners found peace in a blissful rhythm guitar. In other words, songwriting, arranging, and musicianship ruled. In this recording project, the artistic quality is very high.

From MUSIC VEIN: http://musicvein.wordpress.com/2013/08/01/album-review-not-for-ordinary-people-by-camera-soul/
“’Not For Ordinary People’ really is as it says on the the label – for people who want to hear something more than the stuff we are subjected to on a daily basis. I take my hat off to the Lombardo Brothers – just how they manage to keep their music fresh after a decade in the business, I have no idea … an album to suit all moods, will have you singing your heart out, or quietly contemplating the lyrics; either way, you can’t go wrong with yet another blessing from Camera Soul. I can’t wait to see them live.”
