A little bit California country, with some SoCal sun and Kentucky twang mixed in for good measure. These are songs you want to take with you on a road trip, songs that send you to that place in the back of your head where you take comfort in the knowledge that so long as you have a glass of bourbon, and a front porch to swing on, everything is going to be alright.
Originally coming together just to sit around and pick on their guitars, Roger Riedlbauer (Jolie Holland, Transmission, Boxcar Saints) and Charles Sommer (Halifax Pier) found a good thing arising out of their late night music sessions and decided to get to work on a full-length album. You can almost hear the creaks in the wood that surely formed the background during these late night recording sessions. A distillation of the two friends’ inspirations and interests, these songs draw equally from the absurd, the conflicted, the organic and the derelict. The result is a heartbreaking sound that won’t easily leave your head.
With an all-star ensemble of musicians who have played with the likes of Tom Waits, Jolie Holland, Sean Hayes, Court and Spark, and John Vanderslice, The Cannery bring us a solid debut album of melodic acoustic songs accompanied by; Ara Anderson (trumpet), Tom Heyman (pedal steel), Jason Schwartz (upright bass), Josh Tillinghast (drums), Alison Johnson (backup vocals), and Kristina Forester (cello).
