Album Notes

Soon after teaching herself to play the guitar at age 10, Terry Horowit started writing folk songs and continued singing and composing for guitar and voice through college and graduate school. After a hiatus of many years, her lifelong love of folk music combined with a profound respect and appreciation for Hebrew text led her in 2000 to begin composing settings for prayers and liturgical texts. It led her as well to enroll in a Cantorial seminary from which she graduated in 2002. For 15 years in Rockville, Md, Terry tutored b'nei mitzvah and taught classes in cantillation and Jewish prayer services. She was also lead vocalist with the performing group Shalshelet (no connection with the Shalshelet Foundation) from 2002-2007. Between 2004 and 2008, eight of her songs were chosen as winners in the Shalshelet Foundation’s competitions for New Jewish Liturgical Music.

Since moving with her family to Albany, NY in 2007, Terry has been busy establishing herself as teacher, prayer leader and composer/performer of contemporary Jewish folk music. Her melodies spring from the meanings and rhythms of the texts, with sounds ranging from Renaissance style to New Age, from Native American chants to Celtic ditties, from traditional folk ballads to choral works containing complex rhythms and intricate imitative counterpoint, from soothing and relaxing harmonies to fast-paced dance tunes.

There are beautiful new arrangements on this CD. It is my hope to share some of these melodies with my congregation. In the meantime, I am enjoying listening to them at home.

These creative settings of liturgy are beautifully arranged and movingly sung. I particularly loved "Neshama Shenatata Bi" and "Halleluyah" but I was blown away by the "Hodu". The two parts are gorgeous.
